If Momma Ain't Happy

Dear Friends,

This morning as I lay in bed after I woke up, I found myself making a list of why our home feels beautiful. I asked myself this question. What are the things that make our home feel beautiful?

The first thing that came to mind was that I always know where my keys are! That may seem strange to some people but searching for your keys to leave is very stressful when you are in a hurry. I hate walking down to my car and having to come back to the house to get the keys. My keys now have a home and they are not hiding in the refrigerator or a drawer.

The last time I lost my keys they were in my Ziplock bag drawer because I needed to take one with me. At least they are much easier to find because they are on a lanyard. I keep my keys on a hook with my sunglasses and my little purse. Everything has a place and everything in its place. My keys are not lost in the bottom of a huge purse and even when I use my large bag for travel, the lanyard helps me to put my hand on them without having to get out a flashlight.

The next feature that makes my heart sing is the fact that I can open my door to anyone at any time. Our home is not an embarrassment. There may be a few puppy toe prints on the floor and nose prints on the doors but with only a few minutes they are gone. Our home blesses us because I have used my routines to keep it company ready; the best part is that we are the company. We love being home and we also love entertaining on the FLY. It doesn't have to be perfect and I didn't have to spend days getting ready to have friends over. The stress is gone!

Another blessing that adds to the feeling of our beautiful home is the simple fact that my kitchen sink is shining. That shining sink gave me hope when I first decided to get organized. I never dreamed that it would free me from the guilt of a messy kitchen and a chaotic home. That shiny sink started my day with a smile. I was not behind! I no longer dreaded cooking because the dishes were put away and the counters were clear. It is the simple things that make you smile especially when you have lived with mystery water and dirty dishes your whole life.

As I look back at what has contributed to that beautiful feeling of clean in our home it has more to do with me not being all stressed out! When I can accomplish my routines and feel ahead then the stress and anxiety leave my body. I feel that I have more time in my day to do what God put me on the Earth to do! After all, if Momma ain't happy then ain't nobody happy!

Those words, "I don't have time" never cross my lips! Now I can enjoy our home and can bless others because I do have time! A few simple habits can make all the difference in the way your home feels.

Company is Coming

Dear FlyLady,

We have family coming for a visit. I need some help. I can't seem to get anything done.

Struggling to Get it all Done

Dear Struggling,

We have a podcast to help keep you focused.

I did this podcast so that you would have someone coaching you through Crisis Cleaning your home! Right now many of you are in a panic. I want you to use this to help you stay focused and get ready! You can do it!

Crisis Cleaning VIDEO Podcast

Here are the directions of how we do this. Get out your timer.

Dear Friends,

Company is coming! I can hear the panic in your voices. "In a few days, we have a ton of company coming, what am I to do?" If you want a crash marathon cleaning session, I can help you, but be warned, without the routines, your home will be trashed again in a day. So you have to listen closely.

1. GO GET DRESSED ALL THE WAY TO SHOES, HAIR FIXED AND FACE

MOISTURIZED OR MAKEUP PUT ON. DON'T QUESTION ME ON THIS. JUST DO IT. Put on some good working music. Not too fast, just slow and steady. peppy, but not aerobic. Light a candle that has a good scent or put on some spices on to boil on a very low heat.

We are going to start in our kitchens. As the kitchen goes, so does the rest of the house.

2. Set a timer and spend 15 minutes in the kitchen. If your sink is not clean and shiny, then shine it first, then you can fill the sink up with hot soapy water and start to clear off the left and right counters. Empty the dishwasher, When the timer goes off. Stop what you are doing and go to the living room.

3. Set the timer again and do 15 minutes cleaning off the coffee tables or picking up toys or newspapers. Concentrate on one thing. Not all of it. When the timer goes off, then go back to the kitchen. Get a laundry basket and put the things that don't belong in the living room in the basket. Take a garbage bag with you too. Start throwing away the trash.

Don't get caught up in the guilt we have about recycling this stuff. Just bag it up for now. 20 pounds of trash in a landfill is not going to kill you. So get over this perfectionism attitude. As you get your home in order there will be plenty of time to recycle. For now we are focusing on getting the home presentable. You can't do this if you are hyper-focusing on sorting and recycling.

4. In the kitchen set the time for 15 more minutes, continue to work on clearing the counters. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED AND WANT TO CLEAN OUT A CABINET. WE ARE DOING ONLY SURFACE CLEANING.

5. Now take a break and walk around and look at what you have accomplished in just 45 minutes. Set the timer for 15 minutes and drink a cup of tea or coffee or whatever you love and just relax. When the timer goes off. You are back in work mode for 15 more minutes.

6. This 15 minute session is in the bathroom. Do you have this! Clean the sink in here first, then pick up towel and dirty clothes and put them in the hamper. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED AND START A LOAD OF LAUNDRY. I MEAN THIS. LAUNDRY WILL COME LATER!

7. When the timer goes off, you are back in the kitchen. For 15 more minutes. We can do anything in 15 minutes. Keep working till the timer goes off. Then you go to the Living room once again.

8. In the living room, continue to pick up and put away.

9. Every 45 minutes take a 15 minute break.

Adapt this schedule to fit your physical limitations and children's needs. But you get the picture. Stay focused on one job for 15 minutes. You are going to be so surprised at how much you get done in a days time.

My timer is my best Friend.

You can do this.

Now turn off the computer and get to work!

Let's FLY through this Crisis Cleaning, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your guests.

March's Habit: Getting Dressed to Lace Up Shoes

March Habit #25 My Greatest Discovery

Dear FlyLady,

I have been attempting to follow your system since 2006. My perfectionism wanted me to run before I could walk, so I would crisis clean and then be exhausted. This led to me stopping and starting more times more times than I can remember, which did nothing to improve my underlying depression and sense of failure.

I would read about other systems that encouraged me to declutter everything in a day and then obsess about folding things neatly. This gave me one beautifully organized drawer but the rest of the house was in a complete muddle, again leaving me feeling completely overwhelmed.

Then just after Christmas I decided enough was enough. I began to watch the 31 Baby Steps videos on YouTube, and then the penny dropped. I realized the process was more important than the end result, and this gave me a peace that I had not felt before.

I shine my sink, make my bed, swish and swipe, do 5 minute room rescues and 2 minute hot spots. I am doing my laundry each day and am working on decluttering in small manageable chunks. My greatest discovery has been wearing my lace up shoes(I had always resisted this before, afraid of spoiling my carpets), so now I am ready to work, less likely to climb back into bed feeling defeated, and starting to Finally Love Myself.

Thank you

Flybaby Ella, England.

March's Habit: Getting Dressed to Shoes

March is here, and you know what that means — it's time to practice a new habit.

This month, we are going to work on getting dressed to shoes. This is such an important part of our day.

If we aren't dressed to shoes, we can't face whatever our day might throw at us! Here's some great information from FlyLady to help get us started.

With shoes on those feet of yours, your mind says, "Okay, it's time to go to work." ~FlyLady

Getting dressed to shoes is a very important component of the FlyLady system.

You can read about why FlyLady thinks getting dressed to shoes is so important in her first book, Sink Reflections.

This Week we are in Zone 5; our Living Room!

Zone 5 is the living room, family room, or den. But, only focus on one this week. After a few months, you will have them decluttered them all and the detailed cleaning will be a breeze.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in this room. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Tuesday is our day to Plan and Play!

On Tuesdays, We take some time out to Plan our week. Planning means taking time to look at next week and see what we can do to make things easier for us during the next week. Here are some things we can do to plan:

  • Menu planning
  • Activities planning
  • Date Night and Family Fun Time planning
  • Wardrobe planning
  • Checking prescriptions to see what needs to be refilled
  • And anything else you might need to plan. There are tons of things we can do to save ourselves time later!

We also get to have lots of fun on Tuesdays. This is where the play part comes from. When our planning is finished, we get to go play! Spend the rest of the day doing something fun just for you. See that movie you've been wanting to see, take a long bath with a good book, or get out and have some fun at the gym. Whatever makes you happy! This is all about you.

"See what you can do this week to make next week easier!" ~FlyLady

Zone 5: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends:

This week we are in the Living Room Zone and I want each and every one of you to go into your living rooms and stand there. What do have on these surfaces? Are they the same decorative things that you have always had? Do you really love them? Are they cluttered up with too many things? I am not condemning those things but asking you if they still bring you joy and do you still love seeing them in your living room? Or are you just used to them?

You would be amazed at how much neater your living room will appear by just removing a few things. How much easier would it be to dust these areas without all that stuff?

Your mission is to get rid of the stuff that is cluttering up your living room. Take 5 minutes to let go of some things. I am willing to bet that more of you will find you do want to get rid of some things because they do not bring you joy and you are just used to them being there.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
