Ducks in a Row

Dear Friends,

This morning I started to think about how this is our perfectionism creeping in once again. We don't seem to be able to do anything, until we get all of our ducks in a row. As my son's paternal Grandmother used to say. "You milk your ducks and I'll milk mine". That was her way of telling us to mind our own business. She was so right. I don't know what this has to do with anything, but I loved her and she taught me a lot.

Our ducks tend to run into other people's yards. Until we are able to take care of our ducks, we should not even try to tend to others. Have you ever watched a mother duck with her babies in a row behind her? They follow directly behind her. She is setting the example and she keeps them close to her. She cannot force her family to follow her; if she tried to line them all up it would be a big mass of confusion. As it is, she sets the pace and they toddle right behind her.

I know how you think. With our ability to hyper-focus and our perfection thrown in to boot, we have a tendency to want every thing perfect before we even start. How about that control journal of yours? You want it absolutely perfect before you begin to even think about establishing your routines. This is another excuse for not getting started. Do you hear me on this one? If the control journal is not perfect in your eyes, then you have already failed.

Well I am here to tell you, you are wrong. The control journal is just a notebook to hold your routines. Now listen closely to me. Routines can be established by using post-it notes or simple lists put in a notebook. We are not a publishing a book. It is a tool to guide you through your day; it holds your routines, important phone numbers, grocery list and menus. This is such a simple tool, but it doesn't have to be completely finished before you start to use it.

Your baby steps will help you establish your routines one item at a time. You can do this, but don't obsess about it. So if you have said to yourself, "I'll establish my routines, but first I have to get my control journal made:; then you are deceiving yourself once again. It is not the control journal that establishes your routines; it is you. You do the work; you focus on the problem and tackle it with your eyes wide open.

Here is the order that your ducks should be in. You can not force them, you just start the process and it will all fall into place behind you.

Shine your sink

Get dressed to shoes, fix your hair and face.

Lay out your clothes for tomorrow

De-clutter 15 minutes a day

After you have established this small morning and before bed routine, you can begin to add more things. It is not that you even have to think about adding them, it is a natural progression. As you get good at something, you don't have to think about it any longer. You will also be having more time to accomplished things and you will be looking for ways to fill this precious time. I know you don't believe me, but it will happen if you will let and and not think about it too much. Let the system guide you.

Babysteps!!!!

Menu planning

Laundry routines

Basic weekly plan

Zones

These will all fall right into place, when you get the basics out of the way.

Timer Perfectionism

Dear FlyLady,

So I have this issue which I know is a result of my perfectionism showing through, but what do I do when I set my timer for 15 minutes, but my task gets interrupted by the dog needing out/in, my daughter or son needing immediate attention, a phone call, etc.? Do I pause my timer? Or does that interruption just take away what time I have left? Do I start that task over with a new 15 minute round? I know this shouldn't stall me, but it is :-( ... please help!!

Mama in Pittsburgh

Dear Mama in Pittsburgh,

I am so proud of you for noticing that it is your perfectionism that causes you to question everything. Your timer is a tool to help you stay focused.

It is not going to keep you from taking care of your pets or children.

If you do get sidetracked by something; don't worry about the timer. When the timer goes off; you will be reminded of what you were doing.

Then jump back into what you were doing or go on to something else.

Even if you are only focused for five minutes it is better than no focus at all!

I want you to practice using your timer! You will be so surprised at what you can get done.

I want you all to shine! This is your year to do it if you will use your timer to play and have fun getting things done!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #16 It Has Really Blessed Me

Dear FlyLady,

One of the first habits I started when I first joined your 'programme' two months ago was the bed making habit.

I hadn't bothered to make my bed for about 6 years. Partly because, working full time and looking after a person with very high needs full time too meant that I rarely got enough sleep, so making my bed seemed like a waste of time.

But I started doing it, and somehow it has really blessed me.

It seems such a treat to get into a made bed and it inspires me to keep the rest of the room clear too - there has been a huge pile of clothes i couldn't be bothered to hang up on the chair in there for years too.

Yet, since I have made my bed the clothes pile has disappeared totally. When i go in that room, I feel blessed by how nice it all is - every single time!

If anyone else is thinking they can't be bothered, please BOTHER! It really is worth it! thank you FlyLady!

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 3; our Main Bathroom!

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room.

The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your bathroom.

Wednesday is always Anti-Procrastination Day!

Every Wednesday is Anti-Procrastination Day for FlyLady. This is a day that we take care of things we've been putting off. You can use this day to take care of any procrastinating you've done. You can do things like:

  • Do the Laundry
  • Clean Out Your Refrigerator
  • Make doctors appointments
  • Finish that report for work
  • Work on a project with your child
  • Clean the fish tank

You can do whatever you need to take care. This is the day to stop putting things off.

Zone 3 Mission #3 Wednesday

Dear Friends,

Bathroom Mission: Today you are to wash your bathroom rugs, shower curtains and accessories. This will take longer than 15 minutes and for those of you that are working outside the home you may have to schedule this. In total, to take the rugs to the machine and bring them back to the bathroom is less than 15 minutes but the wait time for the washing machine and dryer will take up some time. If you have not rebooted your laundry this is a good time to do that!

For the guest bedroom, Get your feather duster and get the cobwebs out of the corners. I have a bad habit to not step foot in our guest bedroom for a few days, and when I do it is only for a second. I am sure this is a cringe worthy mission, however it has to be done. You CAN do this, YOU have the power to be brave.

FlyKid Mission #3 Wednesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go into our rooms and pick up any clothes we have laying around on the floor, our desks, dressers or chairs. If they are clean - put them away, if they are dirty put them in the dirty clothes basket or hamper. If there are too many to take care of all of them in 15 minutes, you can do this tomorrow too as a bonus challenge!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
