Bed Making Procrastination

Dear Friends,

I have been trying to figure out for years why we FlyBabies don't think it is necessary to make our beds.

Let's just list them.

1. I don't have time in the morning!

2. I am just going to mess it back up again tonight.

3. No one is going to see it but me.

4. Why bother; no one notices anyway.

5. I can't make it up while someone else is still in it.

6. He was in it last shouldn't he make it up!

7. My bed needs to air out first.

8. Our bedroom is not on the tour of homes. (Robert's excuse LOL)

9. Where is the cat going to sleep if we pull the bedspread up?

10. Our bed is too hard to make up.

11. It's my bed and I don't have to make it if I don't want to.

We can come up with every excuse in the world to no make our beds. I think it all comes from a secret rebellion to get back at our mothers. No one can force you to make your bed today. This is your house and your bed. My goal is to motivate you to do it for yourself. You deserve to feel good about your home and to have your bedroom become your sanctuary and not a dumping ground.

Start today! Make your bed and feel that smile come over your face when you walk into your bedroom! Your bed is the shiny sink of your bedroom! When the bed is made the whole room looks and feels comforting.

Are you ready to FLY with your bed smiling at you! You can start today!

Dear FlyLady,

I get it, I get it!.....The light bulb went on!!!!! I struggled to make my bed everyday.....some days so many things are a struggle. But I was telling my niece that she should make her bed, and I said......well...it's like leaving the cabinet doors open in the kitchen. When I realized what I had said, I understood. If you leave the cabinet door open, you are not FINISHED!!!!!

Making your bed finishes the room before you LEAVE it!!!! I would never just leave all my cabinet doors hanging open.....I would finish the JOB!!!!

Now,I make my bed EVERY day!

Thank you Flylady! Alice

How Do I Tame the CHAOS Monster?

Dearest FlyLady,

Greetings from Phoenix, Arizona. I became a FlyBaby back in August. While I feel I am learning to tame the Chaos Monster, he has come back with a vengeance. I have read your book, Sink Reflections, made my control journal, and look back towards my highlights in the book, and I am struggling.

I have rearranged the suggested schedule in your book to suit my own, and I am finding that I have NO time for myself and I am not getting my zone cleaning done. My weekly home blessing is taking me 4-6 hours on Saturday, which is supposed to be my family day. On Sundays, which I have tried to make my day of rest, I am feeling guilty about what I have not accomplished.

I'm pretty sure that I'm doing too much during that "hour." I polish my furniture on all sides, and vacuum under everything. My decluttering sessions and 5 minute hot spot fire drills have all but stopped. I feel like I'm back to square one. I work on Tuesday and Wednesday as a nurse, and my 12 hour shifts end up keeping me away from home for 14 hours. Thus, I'm substituting Saturday and Sunday, my fun and rest day, for cleaning days. I want so badly to make Saturday a family fun day and Sunday a day of worship and rest.

Monday is my errand day, and Friday I babysit for my sister's 5 month-old, who doesn't let me put her down, which leaves Thursday. Thursday, I'm usually so exhausted from working in the intensive care unit. My job physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausts me. Please help! Only you can.

Frustrated and Failing in Phoenix.

Sincerely,

Anna

Dear Anna,

You are putting too much pressure on yourself! You have to learn to say NO and let go of our perfectionism. You were right! You are trying to do too much for Weekly Home Blessing hour.

It seems to me that you are working two days a week. Many FlyBabies would love to have your schedule. I want you to look at how much sleep you are getting. If you are not resting well, it could be aggravating your fatigue.

You may need to tell your sister that you need to take care of yourself on Friday. I know this may seem harsh but if you don't take care of you, WHO WILL?

To help keep up with your routines, read, read, READ the emails.  Everybody needs reminders and these emails are there to help keep you on track. Even though you may get the emails at a time when you can't really do them due to work schedules, keep reading them - they will gradually invade your mind and give you the mindset you need to start adapting the system to your schedule.

Always remember to let go of your perfectionism and use a timer to avoid being overwhelmed. Pick a room and declutter 15 minutes at a time!

Ready? Set, Go!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #9 Feeling Good About Myself

Dear FlyLady,

I didn't make my bed for years - multiple decades of years.

When we were getting ready to move last summer I started to read you and adopted some things while we were at the old house. I decluttered up a storm (6 cubic yard dumpster anyone?) and was lucky enough to be able to have the house empty and easily cleanable before we moved our things in.

After our first night in this house, September 14, 2012, I made the bed. I didn't go downstairs for coffee first. I got washed up, dressed to my shoes and made the bed, then I went downstairs for coffee and breakfast.

I don't always fly as well as I'd like, but the bed gets made every day and the sheets changed every Monday no matter what.

I start the day feeling good about myself; I know I've accomplished something every day, even if nothing else much gets done. I have also adopted your evening routine with laying out my clothes, checking the calendar and making sure the cell phone is charging and my keys are where they should be before I hit the hay. -

Leslie, flying in MA, making the bed daily and planning my menus weekly

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 2; our Kitchens!

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Focus on one little part — reclaim your kitchen sink. Empty everything out of your sink, shine it up, fill it with hot soapy water, and start washing dishes, one at a time.

  • Do a 27-Fling "Trash" Boogie. Trash is clutter. When the bag is full, take it outside, right away, to the trash bin.
  • Clear out your mail hotspot. Get rid of the old magazines, catalogs, and advertisements.
  • Clear the clutter off your counters one at a time.
  • Clear the clutter off your kitchen table.
  • Take a peek at your pantry. Don't pull everything out and start reorganizing; just take a look, see what you need, and start a grocery list.

If your kitchen is clean but still cluttered: start decluttering. Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your kitchen.

Wednesday is always Anti-Procrastination Day!

Every Wednesday is Anti-Procrastination Day for FlyLady. This is a day that we take care of things we've been putting off. You can use this day to take care of any procrastinating you've done. You can do things like:

  • Do the Laundry
  • Clean Out Your Refrigerator
  • Make doctors appointments
  • Finish that report for work
  • Work on a project with your child
  • Clean the fish tank

You can do whatever you need to take care. This is the day to stop putting things off.

Zone 2 Mission #3 Wednesday

Dear Friends:

It is Anti-Procrastination day we are diving into the refrigerator! Grab your trash can and take it over to the refrigerator. First toss out any leftovers that have gotten pushed to the back and have now started to turn into a science project. Second, check the fruit/vegetable drawers and toss what no longer is appealing to eat. Third, check the meat and cheese drawer, check the expiration dates on your items in there and toss what needs to go.

Fourth, check out the doors of the fridge, toss the empty condiment jars and bottles that always seem to magically go back into the fridge when empty. Last, grab a damp rag and wipe down the shelves. Do not take every single thing out of your refrigerator and then take the shelves out to clean them. Just wipe them down. How many times have we decided to tear the fridge apart and three hours later we would rather move out than ever do it again.

Don't let yourself get sidetracked, Have fun and enjoy your sparkling refrigerator!

FlyKid Mission #3 Wednesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
