My dear fellow Interintellects,
I hope you're well! Spring is here, and our online salons now feature more sunlight - not to mention that slowly but surely careful offline gatherings are also becoming an option.
You might have noticed new roles next to your name on Discord:
-
Admin - they work behind the scenes; you can turn to them with questions, or ask them to be added to the private rooms
-
Hosts - they host salons and get access to the #hosts_greenroom (private channel) and the Host Lounge (voice channel)
-
Members - they hold an active Interintellect membership in the new system, including yearly or monthly plans, SuperSupporters and student fellows
-
Alumni - they were in the community before March 7, 2021; a beautiful reminder that they were with us at the very beginning (thank you!) which we honour with continued free access to the community forum
-
[Title of the series] - they joined us via an ongoing series
Most of you have multiple such Discord roles:
|
|
From this time onward, the roles "hosts", "members" and the student fellowships will come with monthly free tickets!
|
|
Are you in "alumni" but would like to enjoy the full perks?
|
|
Every active paid membership - yearly, monthly, SuperSupporter - will come with one free ticket per month. This free code can be used for any event regardless of the price of the ticket (except sold out and series tickets).
As before, every active paid membership also comes with 30% discount on all events.
Members can claim their codes when they log into the ii website.
|
|
For each event they host themselves, every ii host receives one free ticket per month. This free code can be used for any event regardless of the price of the ticket (except sold out and series tickets).
Hosts receive their free code after they've hosted a salon, via email. Since almost every ii host is also a member, this is an additional perk to enjoy! Make sure you make the most out of it ⚡

Student fellowships will come with three free tickets per month. As we only accept a limited number of students, these special members are expected to book, show up, and actively participate at our events. We review these memberships every month.
Moreover, students also enjoy the 30% discount on all of our events.
***
The free codes can be combined: e.g., if you're a student who also hosts two events a month, you will have five free codes for that month!
***
As before, one Scribe per event can attend for free including sold out events and full series. Scribes can coordinate this with the hosts in the scribing channel on Discord, and submit their notes via email after the salon.
***
All members-only events, including IRL, audio or video hangouts, remain free to attend.

As the world starts opening up, some cities have started organising offline salons.
The plan is to slowly, but surely go back to how we used to run these before the pandemic in London, the Bay Area, Atlanta, Oxford, Mumbai, Berlin, Los Angeles, Brussels...
Basic rules (subject to change):
- Utmost respect for the local COVID measures (number of attendees, indoor vs outdoor, masks, asking for test results, asking for attendees to have been vaccinated, etc.), to be clearly indicated in your salon description on our website with links to official resources
- Maximum 15 tickets, even in areas that may permit more
- Preference for outdoor location (Interintellect Picnics are coming soon - more on this later)
- Salon format followed: topic, readings, Interintellect's gathering and hosting ethos, event's length
- Platform format followed: bookings, pictures, summary, potential Scribe present, follow up channel on Discord
As for locations: we're working on longterm partnerships with potential spaces in the most active cities, but in general, the location of offline salons fall under the host's responsibility -- to choose, book, confirm the space and give clear directions in their event description.
The ideal place for an ii gathering is a garden or, where it has become possible again, a nice living room. But some of you will choose rooftops and terraces, parks and café lounges. A good thing about the art of conversation is that it can unfold almost anywhere!
As for refreshments, if the salon is in your home, you will be asked to provide these. In cafés or bars people will naturally order their own, and in the case of parks, attendees will of course bring their own snacks and drinks.
Feedback and notes about this are most welcome: I have opened a Discord channel called #irl_salons, come look it up!

In the Discord channel #ii_clubhouse, some of our hosts, including Patricia Hurducas and Bryan Kam, have started to experiment with potential smaller audio salons held on Clubhouse, maybe even to at some point "broadcast" IRL salons on Discord audio and Clubhouse...
All of this is just at playing-around stage still, but if you want to get involved, please check the channel and ping Bryan, Patricia or from our team Ben Fleming in there.
