Catch the Ballgame at the President’s Reception

Are you headed to the 2018 Spring Management Conference in St. Louis? If so, be ready for a President’s Welcome Reception that promises to “hit it out of the park.”

President Ned Lane has selected the Ballpark Village Budweiser Brew House as the site for his welcome reception. It’s a wondrous restaurant venue with a special twist: You can watch the ballgame broadcasted on 40-foot TV screens located throughout the restaurant – or you can step out onto the second-floor balcony to view the game directly on the field below.

The reception takes place Sunday, May 6, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. – and the St. Louis Cardinals play the Chicago Cubs that evening, beginning at 7:05 p.m. A full dinner will be served and enough time will be alloted so you can connect with colleagues and friends. If you’re registered for the conference, there’s no need to buy any extra game tickets. So, plan to join your fellow GAWDA members and guests and GAWDA leaders for dinner, drinks and a great game-viewing experience.

If you’re not registered for the conference yet, and you want to go, there’s still time — and you can do that right here.
Calling All Contact Booth Program Suppliers

Come and get ‘em!

There’s still a handful of tabletop display spaces available for the Contact Booth Program at the May GAWDA Spring Management Conference. Spaces are going quickly, so if you want to be there and haven’t signed up yet, contact Member Services Manager Stephen Hill (; 954-367-7728, x 220).

The Prize Program initiative is again underway, and GAWDA has issued a call for information on the suppliers who are attending and offering prize giveaways and drawings at that event. The Prize Program is very popular; it’s conducted to entice high attendance and distributor visits to vendor booths.

If you’re planning to display, and you want to offer a prize, be sure to contact GAWDA Media’s Tim Hudson (, 315-445-2347) to get your prize listed and get in on extra promotion.

You can check out the suppliers and manufacturers attending the Contact Booth Program, just scroll down here to see the layout and the list of attendees.)
DOT and OSHA Release Hazard Communication Materials

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have jointly released a  video on YouTube and a  poster  that provide clarity on the differing agency labeling requirements to communicate the dangers of hazardous materials in transportation (DOT) and in the workplace (OSHA).

Both agencies are responsible for enforcing distinct and separate safety standards regarding the appropriate labeling of chemical hazards through PHMSA’s Hazardous Materials Regulations and OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard 2012.
Martinez New FMCSA Administrator

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao swore in  Raymond P. Martinez as the sixth administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration March 1.

Martinez most recently served eight years as the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s chairman and chief administrator. He oversaw the agency’s 2,500 employees and a $330 million annual operating budget with more than $1 billion in annual revenue. In that role, Martinez also advised the governor and state legislature on all areas of motor vehicle transportation and traffic safety and was responsible for developing the agency’s regulatory and legislative agenda and all project prioritization.

DOT Inspector General Finds Detention Times Increase Crash Risks

report by the Department of Transportation inspector general estimates that a 15-minute increase in average dwell time — the total time spent by a truck at a facility — increases the average expected crash rate by 6.2 percent. The increase in crash risk comes from drivers attempting to make up for lost time, the report concludes.

The report, which was mandated by Congress, nevertheless admits that data collected by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is insufficient to evaluate the full effects of detention time and other delays. In the FAST Act, Congress directed FMCSA to issue regulations that cover the collection of data on delays experienced by CMV operators before the loading and unloading of their vehicles and at other points in the pick-up and delivery process.
IRS Issues Guidance on Alternative Fuel Credit Extension

The Internal Revenue Service issued   guidance  March 1 on how to claim the alternative fuel credit of 50 cents per gallon for sales or use in 2017. The credit includes purchases of propane to fuel tow-motors/forklifts. Many GAWDA members sell propane for this use.
The credit had expired on Dec. 31, 2016 but was reinstated for the 2017 tax year in the comprehensive tax reform bill passed by Congress.
GAWDA members may want to advise their customers that they can claim the credit using the procedures set out in the IRS guidance.
