Education and Empowerment | |
The mission of your Council is to promote independence and quality of life for Greene County seniors & caregivers, and one of the key strategies for accomplishing this is providing a variety of educational opportunities. Yes, there are services, programs and products which may improve the lives of some, but ALL of us need and benefit from education.
Education is available in many forms and the results include knowledge and empowerment. Your Council team offers education in many forms, from one-on-one phone or in-person conversations, support groups where we learn from others experiencing similar things to sharing alerts, and updates and items to consider via one of our newsletters.
We also present regular, annual and as needed in-person programs throughout the year, including Medicare 101, Memory Loss & Dementia, and Managing your Medications. The Legal Chat is presented monthly, the four-week It’s My Money, My Stuff, My Life is

presented twice a year, and the Fall Prevention & Wellness Event is held every September. Last year, we added the Savvy Senior Expo to the annual schedule, which includes interesting breakout sessions, info booths, and annual Medicare reviews.
This year, your Council added the WISE program to the mix, which brings seniors together for six weeks to talk about a variety of aging-related topics. We will also present our first Powerful Tools for Caregivers this month, which now has a waiting list for the next offering.
For those who are open to the online world, we now have free classes on technology, cooking, fitness, meditation and more, which you can easily access through our website ( www.gccoa.org/online-classes ).
As you can see, there are many opportunities for education & empowerment. We invite you to participate in whatever fits your situation and we encourage you to share this information with others.

It's Your Money ~ Another Unscrupulous Scam
Utility supplier scams have been around for a while, but unfortunately they aren’t going away nor getting any less dangerous. These scams don’t exclusively target seniors, but we are an attractive prey for unscrupulous shysters. Seniors were raised to be polite. We may think it’s rude to hang up the phone or close the door on someone, and scammers can exploit our hesitation to disconnect. Additionally, many seniors tend to be lonely and more eager to talk to a stranger on the phone or at the door. Click here to learn how to recognize and avoid becoming victims to this latest scam.
