Welcome New Members!
The following organization(s) joined the GNJMA since our August newsletter was published.
Axel Hellman
OurBus set out to make traveling easier. Their idea was simple: to create bus routes that people actually need based on crowdsourcing and demand. They started with one route linking North Jersey commuters to New York City. Since then, they have rapidly grown to serve thousands of customers across the country.
McCarthy Tire has more than 50 service locations in 9 states along the east coast of the United States, including seven retread manufacturing plants. They employ close to 1,200 associates and service thousands of commercial, industrial, and retail customers every year, from large fleets of tractor trailers and construction equipment to police cars and family vans.

GNJMA Attends Port Authority Meeting
For nearly 70 years, the southwest corner of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue has featured the Port Authority Bus Terminal. A new facility - to serve even more riders - has been talked about for years. The current terminal handles 860 buses an hour during rush hours and a total of 260,000 daily passenger trips. That's expected to jump by 30% in two decades as the bi-state agency looks to boost mass transit ridership.
There have been design competitions and public meetings, including one on Thursday, September 5th. Board representatives Pattie Cowley, Jonathan DeCamp (DeCamp Bus) and Frank Smith (A. Yankee Line) attended the public hearing. Pattie made public comments on behalf of the Association and its members, sharing desires from bus operator members.
Options Being Considered:
The location and size of a new structure have been major concerns; 15 possibilities were reviewed, including moving the bus terminal to New Jersey. There's three current options being submitted to the federal government:
- Build a new bus terminal at the current spot
- Remodel the existing structure and add space at the Jacob Javits Convention Center property. The Javits Center on 11th Avenue is a little under a mile away from Port Authority. A project there would require approval from the state and reconfiguring access for buses to the Lincoln Tunnel.
- Build an entirely new terminal on the lower level of the Convention Center and in that area
Next Steps:
Federal officials will review the public comments and options, then weigh in. The Port Authority has budgeted $3.5 billion for the new terminal, but the overall cost could hit $10 billion depending on which of the three designs it chooses. The agency will ask for environmental impact statements for each option and then pick a winner. Officials say construction could start by 2022.

GNJMA Opposes Toll Hike & Joins Coalition
Last month, our Association signed on to join a coalition to enlist passenger's assistance in an effort to combat a proposed toll increase to keep their passenger fares as low as possible.
An update to our August 23rd Member Alert, more than 1,000 public comments have been made through our e-mail campaign. Yesterday, members of the coalition discussed the matter with members of the New Jersey State Senate, asking for letters of support and/or to weigh in. A number of Senators have agreed to weigh in and see what they can do.
Additionally, News 12 NJ is monitoring this closely and it is on their radar for a story later this month when the PANYNJ plans to vote.
