Galt Residents Oil Filter Drop Off

Galt residents have upcoming opportunities to safely recycle used oil filters at local auto parts stores.

Properly recycling used oil filters helps protect our environment by preventing oil contamination in soil and waterways. Oil filters contain metal that can be recycled and reused, and any remaining oil can be properly managed instead of entering the waste stream.

Celebrating Galt Businesses Leading the Way in Recycling

On February 3rd, we had the honor of recognizing three local businesses during the Galt City Council meeting for their exceptional recycling efforts throughout 2025.

Working closely with our operations team, we identified businesses that consistently demonstrated clean and responsible recycling habits. These businesses have incorporated sustainable practices into their daily operations and gone above and beyond to keep recyclable materials free from contamination. Their efforts help strengthen our local recycling system and support a cleaner Galt.

This year’s Outstanding Recycling Practices Award recipients include:

BIA Cordon Bleu

BIA Cordon Bleu, a wholesale manufacturer of high-quality porcelain, stoneware, bakeware, dinnerware, and serve ware, has operated in Galt since 2001. The company supplies trusted kitchenware products nationwide while maintaining strong roots in the local community. Andrew Baughman, Director of Operations, attended the City Council meeting and accepted the award on behalf of BIA Cordon Bleu.

Pizza Guys — Galt

Pizza Guys in Galt has proudly served the community since 2006 and is approaching 20 years in operation. Owned by Davis Tran, the locally operated franchise is known for fresh pizzas, pastas, salads, wings, and desserts. With more than 20 years of hands-on restaurant experience, Tran leads with a strong commitment to hospitality, operational excellence, and community engagement. Davis Tran attended the City Council meeting and accepted the award on behalf of Pizza Guys in Galt.

Dry Creek Liquors — Galt

Dry Creek Liquors in Galt has been family owned since 1989. Navdeep Dhillon’s father operated the store for more than 30 years before Navdeep took over operations in 2022. Today, the family continues its long-standing commitment to serving the community while maintaining responsible recycling practices that help reduce contamination and support an efficient recycling system.

By recycling correctly and consistently, these businesses support a more efficient recycling process, reduce contamination, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier Galt community. Their dedication plays a vital role in ensuring recyclable materials can be properly processed and reused.

Cal-Waste thanks these businesses for leading by example and demonstrating how responsible recycling practices make a meaningful difference. Their efforts help keep the Galt community clean while supporting long term environmental sustainability.

Galt Winter Bird Festival

Earlier this month, Cal-Waste participated in the Galt Winter Bird Festival on Saturday, February 7th, where we had the opportunity to connect with residents about an important topic that directly impacts our local watershed: microplastics.

Our interactive display showed how plastics break down over time. The top layer of our exhibit displayed common trash items such as plastic bags and food packaging. As each layer moved downward, the plastics became smaller and smaller, eventually breaking down into microplastics. These tiny particles can enter our local waterways when plastics are littered, improperly disposed of, or not managed correctly.

Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than five millimeters. They do not biodegrade. Instead, they fragment into smaller and smaller pieces. Once in the environment, they can travel through storm drains, creeks, rivers, and eventually into larger water systems. These particles can be consumed by fish and wildlife and may even make their way back into our food supply.

One of the most eye opening demonstrations involved fleece clothing. The fleece jacket you likely wore to the festival is made from synthetic plastic fibers. We collected water from a washing machine after washing fleece fabric and placed it under a microscope. What residents saw were hundreds of tiny plastic fibers released during a single wash cycle. Studies show that even modern wastewater treatment facilities can only remove about 60 percent of these microplastic fibers. The remaining particles can enter our watershed.

Research has also found that microplastics are widespread in the environment. Studies estimate that approximately 95 percent of table salt sampled globally contains trace amounts of microplastics. These particles have been detected in oceans, freshwater systems, soil, and even the air.

The message is not that plastic itself is bad. Plastics serve many important purposes in our daily lives. The key is proper organization and disposal. When trash and recyclables are handled correctly, we significantly reduce the risk of plastics entering our environment.

Simple actions make a difference:

• Secure trash in proper containers

• Avoid littering

• Keep recyclables clean and loose in your cart

• Close cart lids to prevent materials from blowing away

By working together and managing our waste responsibly, we help protect Galt’s watershed, wildlife, and community for generations to come.

Cal-Waste is proud to support events like the Galt Winter Bird Festival and continue educating residents on how small everyday actions can make a big impact.

Working Together for Galt: Service, Sustainability, and Smarter Recycling

On Thursday evening, February 19th, Galt’s local community service organizations gathered at Cal-Waste for a community mixer. Members of Galt Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis came together to discuss service efforts in our community and learn more about the recycling process.

During the event, attendees toured our operations and gained a better understanding of how recyclables are sorted at our Material Recovery Facility. The discussion focused on how properly sorting recyclables helps conserve natural resources and gives materials a new life.

At Cal-Waste, our Education Team offers afterhours tours for individuals and community groups who would like to visit our facility, learn more about our industry, and see firsthand how making a few simple choices can positively impact our community and our planet.

A Special Rescue at Cal-Waste

Recently, one very special little guest was discovered tucked underneath a recycling truck in our mechanics’ shop. Covered in grease and clearly frightened, this tiny kitten had somehow made quite the journey before being safely rescued by our team.

Now affectionately named Shelli, she is on the road to a brighter future thanks to Purrfectly Pawsible, a Galt based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping community cats. The organization assists with TNVR efforts, veterinary care, food needs, and rehoming lost or abandoned cats right here in our community.

After her traumatic entrance, Shelli is still a little timid, but she is already making progress and showing signs of becoming a loving companion. With care, patience, and a safe home, she has every chance to thrive.

This rescue also serves as an important reminder to make sure your trash and recycling carts are secure and safe for animals. Please keep lids fully closed, avoid leaving bags outside of carts, and check bins before moving them. Small animals sometimes seek shelter in unexpected places, and a quick check can make a big difference.

If you have room in your heart to give Shelli a forever home, please reach out to Purrfectly Pawsible on their facebook page: Purrfectly Pawsible.

At Cal-Waste, we are proud to serve our community in many ways, sometimes even rescuing a tiny passenger along the way.

Glass Recycling Made Simple

Learn the Do's and Don'ts of recycling glass jars and bottles. Be sure to leave the lids on, and don’t worry if the glass is broken. During processing, materials are broken down and magnets separate the metal lids so they can be recycled properly.
