Your Gift of Language
A message from Fr. John Spicer, Rector
| |
This Sunday is Pentecost, when we celebrate God sending the Holy Spirit to empower us as we walk with Jesus. We sense the Spirit’s presence and love in so many settings – everything from a quiet walk in the woods, to a stunning symphony, to being with your beloved. But in the Pentecost story from Acts, Jesus’ followers first encountered the Spirit in their ability to speak in languages they didn’t know. That gift came so they could talk with people outside their comfort zones about the new life God was sharing with them.
The Spirit’s gift of language wasn’t just a one-time miracle in Jerusalem. At our Vestry meeting this week, we had a great conversation about how the Spirit uses us as instruments for reaching others in everyday life. We talked about times we’ve found ourselves empowered to have spiritual conversations we hadn’t been expecting – maybe consoling a friend in tough times or helping someone listen for divine direction in a moment of ripe possibility. The Spirit shows up, helping us find the words to engage with others about faith and invite them to experience divine life for themselves. So, I invite you to look for those opportunities and then follow the Spirit’s nudge.
I also invite you to help us remember the Spirit’s gift of language in our worship tomorrow by reading the Gospel aloud in the language of your choosing. We’ll do this a little differently than what I described in last week’s article. The deacon will invite all of us to read aloud John 20:19-23. You can do that in a foreign language or in English.
So, if you’d like to read along in English, you’ll have the text in the bulletin. If you’d like to read in a language other than English, go to BibleGateway.com (https://www.biblegateway.com), enter “John 20:19-23” in the search box, click on “All” in the language pull-down menu, and find your tongue.
Whatever language you choose, don’t worry about reading it perfectly. The same truth holds in church as in day-to-day life: God doesn’t expect perfection. Instead, trust that the Spirit will equip you with language that’s perfect enough.

As summer begins and the pace of life begins to shift, we’re entering a new season at St. Andrew’s—one we’re calling A Season to Breathe: Summer at St. Andrew’s.
Summer means many things—travel, busy schedules, or simply a change of pace. But it can also be something more: a chance to open the windows of our hearts and let the Holy Spirit move through. In these months of “ordinary time,” we are invited into a different kind of rhythm—not one of hurry or pressure, but one of growth. Like the green season that surrounds us, this is a time for roots to grow deeper and branches to stretch higher, as we learn to notice God at work in the ordinary rhythms of our lives.
So this summer, we invite you to make space—not just for doing, but for being. To breathe deeply, to give thanks, and to pay attention to what God is already stirring within and around you. Throughout the season, there will be opportunities to rest, to connect, and to serve—simple ways to open yourself to the Spirit’s movement in everyday life.
Whether your days are full or unhurried, structured or spontaneous, may this be a season of renewal. A time to reconnect—with God, with one another, and with your own soul—and to listen for what might be next.

Ask your child:
- “What would you have done if you were on the boat?”
- “What helps you feel calm when you’re scared?”
- “How can we remember Jesus is with us this week?”

Adult Spiritual Growth
"We have a policy of not limiting the theological reflection of St. Andrew's members. Groups don't have to get their materials approved by a central authority; in fact, we actively encourage members to start discussion groups that come from different perspectives. That's the Episcopal way." - Fr. John Spicer, Rector
