Worship & Education
ONE SERVICE ON SUNDAY, APRIL 28
This Sunday, Good Shepherd will hold one worship service at 10:30 a.m.  As usual, Sunday School classes will take place at 9:10 a.m., and coffee hour will follow the worship service.
NEW SERIES IN DiGG CLASS (DELVING INTO GOD'S GRACE)
Have you ever felt a slight discomfort while saying the Apostles Creed - as though you were for the moment stepping out of the 21st century back into the fourth century? Or have you ever wondered if the Christian faith could be rephrased in thoughts appropriate to our Scientific Age, as the words of the Nicene Creed were phrased in thoughts appropriate to the Roman Empire?

Come and encounter the theology of the Scientist/Mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, whose understanding of evolution allows faith to be informed by science, and science to be transformed by faith. See yourself as a participant in the grand procession from the Big Bang to Point Omega (what an earlier age called the Kingdom of God). In three sessions we will: (1) be introduced to Teilhard's thought, (2) explore that thought more fully and deeply, and (3) consider its implications for how we live and what we appreciate today.

The three sessions will be in the three weeks following Easter: April 28, May 5, and May 12. Dr. Ed Barrett, who first lectured on Teilhard more than fifty years ago, will preside. Come early (9:10 a.m.) so as not to miss the introduction, or disturb the thought of others. The sessions will end at 10:00 a.m. promptly, out of consideration for choir rehearsal.
INTERSECTIONS CLASS
The Intersections Class discusses a variety of topics that connect faith and life. Come s hare your perspectives and hear from others.  On Sunday, April 28, Heidi Bullock will lead the class in a visio divina study, that uses artwork to illustrate a Bible passage. Please join us in Room 6 at 9:30 a.m. for the discussion, or come at 9:10 to chat and enjoy refreshments.
At Good Shepherd
PG'S PEN
Lent, Holy Week, a glorious Easter Day! I hope you are as grateful as I am to have experienced this special season at LCGS. Now we continue to rejoice as "Easter People," and prepare for Pentecost and the continued unfolding of the Church Year.

And something else exciting is happening: of course that is the Call Process which will result in the choosing of the next pastor of Good Shepherd. Our Ministry Site Profile (MSP), which tells the story of our church and community, and shares the expectations and hopes of our congregation, is being compiled. The Call Committee is organizing. Soon the first group of names and information on pastoral candidates will be coming from the Bishop's Office. And the Committee will soon be making sure you are aware of what's going on in this all-important search every step of the way. They need your prayers, understanding and support, and I know you will give it.

So what exactly is my role as your Intentional Interim Pastor in all of this? First, it is to serve as your pastor in every way a pastor serves a congregation. And it is also to observe, study, suggest, and implement, as I'm able, anything and everything that will make LCGS as healthy, vibrant, and Spirit-filled a congregation as it can be. My role is to create an environment here where the next pastor and this congregation have the opportunity to thrive together in living and sharing the Gospel of Jesus. And in the short time I have with you, I will bring any gifts I have, my 54 years of experience in the Church, and all the guidance I can receive from the Holy Spirit to make that happen! To the extent it does, you will indeed be Easter People, and I will have done my job.

Next time in this space I will share with you a way LCGS, or any church, can take a giant step toward becoming more healthy as a Gospel Church full of Easter People. Until then, like the Call Committee, I need your prayers, understanding and support.

To God be the Glory!
Pastor Graf
HOLD THE DATE!!

The annual LCGS Church picnic is scheduled for Sunday, June 23! Mark your calendars now and stay tuned for more information in the next few weeks.

BATTER UP!
The Fellowship Committee needs your help to determine how many people would be interested in attending the afternoon Asheville Tourists home game on Sunday, July 14. With a group rate and other applicable discounts, the estimated ticket price would be only $10 - $12 per person, and we would carpool from the church parking lot following the 10:30 service coffee hour. It will be a great afternoon of fun and fellowship for LCGS members and guests of all ages!  Please use the signup sheet on the bulletin board to let us know if you are interested in attending.
SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Space is available to host sanctuary flowers for May 5 and 19. If you would like to sponsor flowers, please sign up on the bulletin board. Thank you!
NEW LIBRARIAN AT GOOD SHEPHERD

Thank you to Deb Kelly-Greene, who has agreed to be our church's new librarian. Also, a big thank you to Annette Blum who has been our librarian for several years and is training Deb in her new position. We appreciate you both!
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?
Sign up by April 28 if you'd like to join this next round of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" which starts in May!
This is such a great way to get to know new church members and learn more about members we've already met. Those who sign up are divided into groups that will get together monthly in May, June, July and August. There is a "convener" assigned for each group who makes the initial contact and serves as the first host. Then each person or couple takes turns being the host.  We welcome singles to sign up either individually or with another single as a couple.

Typically, groups take turns meeting in each other's homes with the host providing the entrée, bread, and beverages, with others in the group providing the appetizer, salad, and dessert. However, groups have the flexibility to decide together whether they want to stick with this tradition or do something different - such as have dinner at a restaurant or meet for brunch or lunch instead of dinner. Making new traditions is highly encouraged! Plus, based on feedback from past participants, we are now providing the option to sign up for groups of 6 or 8 participants.

Please sign up on the bulletin board ASAP to be included in this opportunity to make new friends and connect with existing friends. Groups will be announced in late April/early May. In the meantime, contact Donna Brim (donnambrim@gmail.com) or Marilyn Carlson (884-2756) with any questions.

EL PASO MISSION: APRIL 28 - MAY 11, 2019

I  want to thank the Good Shepherd congregation for the ways you are and will accompany me during my time in El Paso, Texas. You have generously given financial gifts; because your gifts are more than are needed for trip expenses, there are funds to give to Annunciation House where the money will be used to purchase items needed to provide hospitality to refugees (i.e. food, toiletries, diapers, underwear, tote bags). Because of your generosity and the gifts of many others in our community, we are able to take a check for $2,000 to Annunciation House. You have promised to pray; you have spoken words of encouragement to me; you have filled a basket with chap stick for the children! I feel embraced by your concern and care - thank you.

We, Judy Nebrig and I, leave early Sunday morning, April 28, to fly to El Paso. We will be staying in a church - air mattress, pillows and access to kitchen provided - and we will be working through Annunciation House. We have been assigned to work at Mesa Inn, one of many temporary shelters of Annunciation House for people fleeing their homes in Central America. We will work from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. each day, welcoming newly arrived brothers and sisters and helping them make arrangements to be with family or friends in the U.S.

During my time in El Paso, I will be in touch with the congregation as I am able and plan to share some of our experiences and reflections during the Sunday School time on May 19. On Monday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church, there will be an event for the larger community of Brevard / Transylvania County where Judy and I will share our experiences and reflections on our time at the border.

Please take a booklet of Scripture readings and prayers on the table in the Commons, which focuses on welcoming and caring for our neighbors.

I leave you with a prayer that I offer on behalf of all of us -

Gathering God, draw us out beyond our cramped order of care.
Draw us toward the neighbor, the other, the outsider,
the hurting one. May we practice compassion.
                                         Amen.

Ellen Dozier

COMMUNITY EVENT
On  Monday, April 29 , our community will celebrate the grand opening of Transylvania County's new Children's Advocacy Center, located at 107 S. Johnson Street. The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by agency open houses (Community Services Building and The Children's Center) beginning at 3:15 p.m. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., enjoy a community block party that will include food, music, art and craft activities, a therapy dog demonstration, kickball game, and more (i n front of First Baptist Church on S. Gaston Street).  Good Shepherd will host a craft table at the block party. Come by and say hi!

What is a Children's Advocacy Center?
The main purpose of a CAC is to coordinate the efforts of the various agencies that intercede in child abuse cases (social services, law enforcement, district attorney's office, mental health, etc.). It is a safe, friendly place where children can receive needed services and begin to heal.
HOST FAMILY NEEDED
A host family is needed for three months to host a student from Germany who will attend Brevard High School. If you're interested or want to find out more, please contact Ann Farash (annintheforest.hotmail.com).
RISE & SHINE "GUEST TUTOR DAY"
Thursday, May 2
Rise & Shine invites members of our community to join us in tutoring our scholars so that they can see the great things that are happening in our program. If you are interested in  learning more about Rise & Shine, meeting other tutors and scholars, and/or spending a day tutoring, please contact Laura Leatherwood (828-506-2480 or  laura@riseshine.org).

SYNOD STORYTELLERS
Here is a story from the NC Synod's series, Synod Storytellers, which illustrates how we are church together. The stories relate to the Synod's vision statement: God calls the NC Synod of the ELCA to cultivate & celebrate vital congregations, identify, equip, and nurture whole & healthy leaders, embrace & engage in collaboration, and proclaim the promise of the resurrection with a prophetic voice.

Whole & Healthy Leaders:   "I wouldn't be who I am..."
The NC Synod's Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) has always been committed to equipping leaders for the sake of sharing the Gospel. Picture a weekend in late February filled with the organized chaos of a giant game of "rock, paper, scissors" with about 500 old and new friends; music led by a band of teenagers that are fairly new musicians and a few adults who care deeply about them and the music they play and sing; faith stories and reflections shared by some of the brightest and best 9th through 12th graders around; a bishop who tosses out free t-shirts and preaches/presides at worship; intentional faith formation in small groups; 129 pizzas consumed as a late night snack; lots of fun and very little sleep. This is just a snapshot of what happens at the NC Synod's annual LYO Assembly. And, for the past 25 years, Deacon Tammy Jones West, assistant to the bishop, has been the staff person responsible for this yearly event.
