A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM PASTOR GRAF
An Invitation to the People at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church  Chosen by God to be TRUSTEES of his Holy Word, his Church, and his World:

On Pentecost Sunday, June 9, you had opportunity to join around the church altar and commit yourselves to a renewal of being the Holy Spirit-enlivened community God created us to be. You accepted the call of our Lord to be filled with God's Holy Spirit, to serve as trustees to all that is God's, and to endeavor to make a positive difference in this community, in the world, and in your own lives.

This is now your invitation to attend  an informal gathering at the church
(it has been necessary to move the gathering  from Bill Johnson's home)
on Tuesday, June 18, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Light refreshments will be served.

At the gathering, you will hear plain talk about being "God's Trustees" in today's world, how to exercise effective trusteeship of God's message of love, care, and salvation, and a new, exciting, and potentially life-changing year-round program Pastor Graf calls "Because of YOU!" You will also be given the opportunity to be part of a leadership team to implement that program that may be the most crucial thing you can do for your church now and for years to come. Pastor Graf will be giving you information he has been gathering and sharing with hundreds of congregations in Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, and North Carolina over the past 50 years!

Please mark your calendars now and plan on coming! Come and learn how the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd can make a significant difference in people's lives as truly "A Place of Grace."

Thank you,

Pastor Graf

UPDATE ON CHILDREN'S MINISTRY AT GOOD SHEPHERD
This has been a wonderful school year for the youth of LCGS. They enjoyed opportunities to practice prayer, sing, serve, and have fun!

The youth volunteered during the worship services as acolytes, presenters, offering carriers, ushers, readers, and greeters. They learned the purpose and vision for various committees and worked jointly with the adults. They performed songs throughout the year during the worship service and participated in the hiding and sharing of the Hallelujah banner.

The youth attended Youth Quake 2018, a WNC synod event, walked in the Brevard CROP Hunger Walk, sorted supplies for Sharing House and The Haven, painted the football player for Super Bowl Sunday, made ornaments for Good Shepherd's giving tree, selected, collected, and counted noisy offerings, made containers for local schools to collect dried out markers, and made cards for some of our homebound members. This picture includes markers from LCGS, Pisgah Forest Elementary, Brevard Elementary, and Rosman Elementary. Brevard Academy mailed their markers separately.

The youth studied different methods of prayer including coloring and singing prayer, painting prayers on rocks to share downtown, prayer positions, praying for the length of a chime, and the use of prayer chapels, pictured here. There is an opening on the bottom of each chapel to place the prayer(s). We enjoyed ending the school year with an inter-generational Pentecost event on June 9!

  CALL PROCESS UPDATE
The call committee has received the Ministry Site Profile (MSP) from the Church Council. Currently, the call committee members are reviewing the information individually. During our next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, we will review the MSP together and prepare for our call committee workshop which will be held on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6. The workshop will be led by an ELCA Synod trainer.
ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC
The annual LCGS picnic will be held on Sunday, June 23, at Lake Atagahi Park in Connestee Falls. Worship services that day will take place at Good Shepherd as usual, at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. The picnic will immediately follow the 10:30 service.

Pulled pork (along with buns and sauce), chicken, lemonade, water, plates, cups, napkins and eating utensils will all be provided. Congregation members are asked to provide BBQ-type family-sized (8 - 10 servings) side dishes/salads and desserts. Also, please feel free to bring other beverages of your choice.

Besides bringing a dish to share with your church friends and family, please also bring along a can or box of non-perishable food to share with your friends and neighbors at Sharing House. Toilet paper and paper towels are especially needed right now. A full list of specific requests from Sharing House is posted on the bulletin board. If it is more convenient or for those not attending the picnic, items can be dropped off in the bins in the commons as well.  Cash or checks will also be welcome. Thank you!

Please sign up on the bulletin board no later than June 17 so that Connestee Falls security can have visitor passes available for everyone. Questions may be directed to Leigh Ann Stinson, De Carlson or Donna Aiken-Colflesh.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Could you assemble one shelf for the children's Sunday school room?
Could you assist someone who can?  Matthew Busche wonderfully agreed and started cutting the wood for the shelves.

Blue prints, hardware and pre-cut wood will be supplied to each volunteer or volunteer group. We need to have six shelves built before the new school year. If you can help, p lease contact Heather Merritt, Children's Ministry Coordinator ( hmerrittlcgs@gmail.com).

COMMUNITY CARE CORNER
The "Community Care Corner" feature in the weekly newsletter allows us to update you on people for whom we are praying or to submit a new prayer request. If you have an update on someone or a new prayer request to share in the Corner, please email or call the church office (lcgs@comporium.net or 883-3680) by noon on Thursday.

Carol Maguire, Arthur Raynold's cousin, died last week. We remember her family and friends in our prayers.

Raegan Eggleston will have surgery on her foot on Friday, June 14.

Ann, friend of Kimberly Dunbar, began radiation treatment for breast cancer on June 10. She was also recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which has complicated her treatment plan.

Lourdes Swancara, the daughter-in-law of Sheila and John Swancara, had a stroke in early May. She is not progressing in her treatment as quickly as was hoped.

Marilyn Carlson will have knee surgery on June 20.

We've been praying for the grandson of friends of Robert and Jane McKeown, Hampton Schulz, for the past several weeks. Here is an update:

Want to share the good news that Hampton's tests of heart and bladder, and scans of bone and brain, all came back negative. He has no residual heart and bladder effects from prolonged chemo, and he has no evidence of cancer in bone and brain. It has been a long and, at times, difficult journey. Your prayers and concern have been so helpful, and have helped us and Michael and Jennifer get to this point. Thank you for your caring and prayers, and for expanding your supportive prayers to your faith community in Brevard.

MEALS FOR THE HAVEN
LCGS will be preparing food for The Haven for the weekend of July 5-7. If you'd like to be part of this ministry team, please attend a short planning session in the fellowship hall during coffee hour following the second service this Sunday, June 16. If you cannot help out with meal preparation on Friday July 5 at LCGS, but would like to help out, we would appreciate baked goods such as breakfast muffins, quick breads, coffee cakes, desserts, etc.  Just label them "for The Haven" and drop them off in the kitchen by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 5. Any questions, contact Barb Jackson (828-553-4771 or barbandmark@comporium.net).
WOMEN OF THE ELCA CRAYON DRIVE
The Women of the ELCA are asking for donations of 16-count packs of crayons. These crayons will be used to help fill care kits for Lutheran Social Services. The crayons are readily available at Dollar Tree as well as several other retailers in town. Please bring your donations to the church by Wednesday, June 19, so that they may be taken to the Spring Gathering on June 21. Thank you!
SMALL GROUP AT SHARING HOUSE
On Thursday, June 13, Outreach Ministry Coordinator Kimberly Dunbar led a journaling and discussion small group at Sharing House. A total of eight people attended the group, which was very well received.
Sharing House  has invited local organizations to offer small groups focused on health to their neighbors, those who receive services through Sharing House. Kimberly will lead a second session of this small group on July 25, and further sessions may be scheduled. Members of Good Shepherd are welcome to attend.

If you have an idea for a small group that you'd like to offer at Sharing House, or if you'd like to attend the journaling and discussion group on July 25, Please contact Kimberly (kimberlylcgs@comporium.net or 883-3680).
OFFERING OF LETTERS CAMPAIGN 2019

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's campaign. A total of 26 people in our congregation wrote 66 letters and postcards to our congressional representatives, advocating for an end to hunger.
NOISY OFFERING
Our next "noisy offering" will take place on  Sunday, June 30, when the children will collect your pocket change in metal buckets (hence, the noise). The offering will benefit the new Children's Advocacy Center of Transylvania County in Brevard, which serves children who have been impacted by child abuse.  The Center is a program of Southmountain Children and Family Services, which has been serving Western North Carolina since the founding of their first center in Morganton in 1998.

Start rounding up your change now! If your change jar happens to be low, bills and checks will be gratefully accepted by the children. Thank you!

NEWS FROM THE NC SYNOD ASSEMBLY
Assembly Highlights Vitality
The 2019 NC Synod Assembly highlighted the many ways that congregations are vital, specifically telling stories of life-giving ministries with God, each other, and the world. An additional highlight was the Friday evening worship service which honored the 40th anniversary of the ordination of the Rev. Earlean Miller, the first woman of color to be ordained in any Lutheran church in North America. Pastor Miller served her first call at Prince of Peace, Greensboro. Also celebrated were the six women of color currently serving in our synod.

Our synod gathered for voting and learning and praying and celebrating!  Read the stories of 2019 assembly here.
