A COMMUNITY SERVICE OF HOPE AND ASSURANCE

Good Shepherd will host a community Service of Hope and Assurance on Sunday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.  The service, which is jointly sponsored by the Reimaging Health Collaborative and Worship and Music teams, will focus on providing quiet, uplifting accompaniment for those who may have difficulty facing the impending holiday season. Longer winter nights and the upcoming holidays can amplify feelings of grief, loss, sadness, stress, and anxiety. The gathering will be a time to acknowledge personal and community struggles and to receive hope, comfort, and strength from God and from one another.  Refreshments and time for fellowship will follow the service .
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Elementary School Children
The class begins at 9:10 a.m. with music in the choir room, followed by a lesson using the Godly Play approach in Room 3 of the Education Wing.

Intersections Class
The class will not meet on November 17 or 24. The class will resume on December 1.

MISSION PARTNERS MEETING AT LIVING WATERS
On Wednesday of this week, November 13, a group from Good Shepherd (Kimberly Dunbar, Lauren Weed, Robert and Jane McKeown, Jody Schuld and Ellen Dozier) went to Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee to participate in a meeting of churches who are mission partners with Living Waters. Bishop Tim and Danielle DeNise from the North Carolina Synod staff were there as well as Pastor Jack from Living Waters. We talked about being a mission partner who shares resources and money and who "shows up." We learned some of the history of Living Waters and more about how the Food Pantry and Resource Center functions. We shared ideas and experiences, enjoyed a meal together, and shared the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Food distribution - lots more food and staple items inside the building
As we were leaving, a large group of folks were arriving to receive food from the Food Pantry. Along with the beans, rice, fruit, toilet paper, and dish soap, those who come to the Food Pantry also receive the love and compassion of Jesus.

Pastor Jack encouraged us to invite members of our congregations to "come and see" what is happening at Living Waters. That invitation is extended to all of us.

NEWS FROM THE HAVEN
The Haven will host an Open House on  Saturday, November 23 , from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., featuring live music with Cody and Jonlyn Siniard and Barrett Davis. All are welcome to stop by!

Currently, The Haven is in desperate need of volunteers, specifically overnight volunteers (8:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.), but also daytime volunteers (4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.). Volunteers fill out paperwork and then shadow another volunteer before being given their own shift.

Check out their Fall Edition of Brick by Brick to find out more about what has been going on at The Haven!

IDENTIFYING CORE VALUES
Some of you (I hope) will recognize what we've referred to as our Purpose/Vision Statement or our Guiding Principles for the NC Synod. To refresh your memory, here it is:

God calls the NC Synod of the ELCA to...
Cultivate and Celebrate Vital Congregations
Identify, Equip and Nurture Whole & Healthy Leaders
Embrace & Engage in Collaboration
Proclaim the Promise of the Resurrection with a Prophetic Voice
...all for the sake of the world.

All of the above has been guiding our synod work for nearly two years now, and we remain committed to that calling. In the meantime, we've been working for the past year on developing more specific core values and a strategic plan for the NC Synod.
