Festive Days and Silent Nights: Navigating the Hidden Contradictions of the Holiday Season
|
|
As the leaves turn beautiful hues of orange and red, and the weather turns chilly, anticipation begins to build in earnest towards the holiday season. Bright lights and festive decorations hit store shelves and home fronts faster than one can say, āsweater weatherā. The air is filled with warm smells and cheerful carols as people around the world gather in celebration, love, and togetherness.
As magical as the season may be, however, it can also camouflage another often-overlooked, and crucially important reality: the significant increase in stress and mental health challenges many people experience during the holidays.
Loneliness: While often depicted as a time for togetherness, the holidays can also be an incredibly lonely time. Those who have lost loved ones, or who are separated by distance or family conflict, may experience heightened feelings of isolation during the holidays.
Financial Stress: The pressure to give and receive gifts can lead to social pressure and financial strain, causing additional anxiety and stress. This pressure can result in individuals overextending themselves personally and financially.
High Expectations: Pressure to achieve the āperfectā holiday can lead to unrealistic expectations, and feelings of disappointment or inadequacy. People may feel the need to create a flawless holiday experience, which can be disheartening when unrealized.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): The decrease in daylight hours and colder weather can contribute to Seasonal Affective Disorder, a form of depression that occurs seasonally.
Suicidal Thoughts and Actions: When the weight of the holidays becomes too great ā often combined with other life and mental health challenges ā the risk for suicide can also increase.
As vital as it is to recognize these challenges and how daunting they may be, it is equally important to understand that there are many ways to acknowledge what may be happening to others, help them feel heard, and instill a sense of hope.
Reduce Stigma and Normalize Seeking Help: It is important to remember that mental health challenges are common, and there is no shame in seeking help. Let friends and family know theyāre not alone. They donāt have to pretend to be happy; rather, encourage them to talk about their feelings.
Offer Inclusivity: When planning holiday events, make an effort to include everyone, especially those who might be feeling isolated. Reach out to friends or acquaintances who might not have family nearby and invite them to join in your celebrations.
Reduce the Material Focus: Shift the focus away from extravagant gifts and emphasize the importance of spending quality time with loved ones. Thoughtful, meaningful gifts can often mean more than extravagant ones.
Manage Expectations: Encourage realistic expectations and remind loved ones that perfection is not necessary. Imperfections are what make the holidays special and memorable.
Self-Care: If youāre feeling overwhelmed, itās okay to step away and make time for yourself, whether itās engaging in personally satisfying activities, practicing relaxation techniques, or even seeking help from a supportive professional.
Suicide Prevention: If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be at risk of suicide, please lean into your own natural support system, or reach out for professional help. There are many resources available, including immediate support at the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Just dial 988, or chat at 988lifline.org.
For many, theyāre associated with joy and celebration; for others, holiday festivities can cast a long shadow over their mental and emotional health. But there is also an abundance of hope: While giving and togetherness, warmth and safety, love and good cheer are all indelible parts of our holiday traditions, they are also invaluable tools for helping those who are struggling find solace and connection. This season let's make sure "Silent Nights" are filled with empathy and support for those who need it most.
