Gifting Cryptocurrency

Nonprofit organizations are now considering crypto assets, including cryptocurrency or other digital assets, as potentially viable options to diversify their portfolios. These considerations have become especially prevalent over the last couple of years, given the turbulence of the market. Many organizations are also wondering if they should be adding crypto assets to their gift acceptance policies, as they try and grapple with what happens if a donor may want to contribute such an asset.

Gifts of cryptocurrency and other digital assets are still a relatively new concept and have not yet been directly addressed under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). However, the accounting for and disclosure of crypto assets were addressed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (“FASB”) last October. The FASB came to a decision that cryptocurrency and other digital assets would be measured at fair value, using the guidance of FASB Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 820, Fair Value Measurement. As such, these assets will be adjusted for increases and decreases in fair value within income each reporting period. Additionally, organizations will be required to expense certain costs incurred to acquire the cryptocurrency and other digital assets (such as commissions). The FASB will consider other topics such as presentation, disclosure, and transition at a future date.

As the FASB continues to explore the accounting treatment of these assets, there are a few planning items that organizations may want to begin working through now, including the following:

  • Deciding whether to accept cryptocurrency or digital assets as contributions, as well as whether to hold them as investments.  
  • If they will be accepted from donors, revisions will likely need to be made to current gift acceptance policies, including how the assets should be handled once they have been transferred to the organization. 
  • Organizing the company’s financial accounts in a way to receive and subsequently liquidate crypto assets.
  • Revising the current investment policy statement to include allocation parameters and methodologies for measuring performance, among other considerations.

In the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics nonprofit report (pre-pandemic), there were 12.5 million paid nonprofit workers, who earned more than $670 billion in wages.

How to align assets with mission - small steps nonprofits can take Many in the nonprofit sector look at their income statements (also known as the “profit and loss” report), but unless you’re a chief financial officer or perform a similar role, you may spend far less time looking at your organization’s overall financial position.
