Annual Nonprofit Conference Brings Back Popular Keynote Speaker
by Beth Benson

Securing the Future (STF), the region’s largest nonprofit conference returns this year on March 1, featuring keynote speaker Vu Le, author of the popular blog Nonprofit AF and founder of the 50,000+ member Facebook group Nonprofit Happy Hour. Vu spoke here at the 2017 Securing the Future conference and was invited back by popular demand.

The 2023 conference theme “Power, People, and Perspective: Provocative Conversations for Nonprofit Leaders,” is the perfect foil for Vu’s focus on equity, questioning long-held beliefs about our work as nonprofits, and the balance of power in fundraising.

“Vu asks the hard questions of nonprofits and funders, and he adds true compassion for the people that work in our sector and the people we serve,” said Megan Fischer, CEO of Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank, and a member of the Leadership Council board and STF steering committee. “Plus, an amazing sense of humor that keeps us hooked.”

A volunteer steering committee of nonprofit and community leaders helped select the speaker, as well as recruit and select breakout session presenters who will cover ethical storytelling, impact-driven mergers, strengths-based wellbeing in the workplace, and creation of a “new table” to address systemic inequities.

Leadership Legacy Awards will also be presented at the conference, which is made possible by presenting sponsors Flynn & Co. and UC Office of Research, along with many more.

To register for the conference, which runs 7:30 am – noon on March 1 at Cintas Center, visit Leadership Council’s website.

Donor giving increases dramatically with the right donor offer That $5,000 a year donor on your file could give you $400,000 a year. Or, that $1,000 donor could give you $100,000. But the reason they aren’t giving what they could is because you are not presenting them with a donor offer that motivates them to give more. And here’s the reason why.

Participatory grantmaking: what practitioners have to say As a consultant focused on participatory grantmaking, I have been thrilled to see growing interest in community-led grantmaking practices. At the same time, I’ve also seen philanthropists dismiss participatory grantmaking as a passing fad.
