Why Nonprofits Should Invest in Executive Coaching
|
|
There is a misconception that executive coaches are for managers who have done something wrong. While it's true that an executive coach could support a difficult employee to help them become a better teammate, today, an executive coach is a proactive perk that can guide managers along their desired career path and support the organization’s ability to deliver its mission. Today’s smart employers understand coaching is an important tool to support high-potential leaders. And the return on investment is huge, studies show that the payoff can be up to 49 times the investment!
As employees climb the ranks, they find their way into management without necessarily learning the skills and techniques required to lead. Executive Coaching reinforces successful leaders’ strengths and accelerates meaningful results. Additionally, executive coaching provides the awareness and direction needed to maximize leadership talent that brings a higher level of productivity, satisfaction, and personal fulfillment. How does executive coaching accomplish this?
Executive coaching helps improve emotional intelligence, a critical tool for leaders. As leaders develop their EQ, it becomes easier for them to identify causes of distress, regulate their emotions, and foster positive working relationships.
One-on-one coaching helps leaders improve interpersonal communication skills. Ineffective communication in the workplace can damage morale, prevent team cohesion, and even lead to accidents. Successful people and businesses are driven by a sense of purpose. Leaders must learn how to come back to the “why” – an ongoing process of being honest about what is and isn’t important. Executive coaches can help them gain motivation and remain centered on their purpose.
Executive coaching helps leaders identify their self-limiting behaviors and gives them strategies to improve their perception of failure. Leaders can become less intimidated by failure by embracing a growth mindset and promoting a learning culture within their organization.
Could any of your employees use an executive coach or could you use an executive coach? Here are some questions to help you decide:
- Is your executive technically brilliant but needs to improve their “soft” skills?
- Do you have an emerging leader needing to elevate their executive presence?
- Could your newly promoted employee need support in assimilating into their new role?
- Could your executive benefit from having a trusted confidante to help them improve and grow
- Does your forward-facing executive need to build confidence and positive relationships with stakeholders?
Just remember, when it comes to executive coaching—a little goes a long way toward turning good into great and maximizing talent and bottom-line results.
