Shining a Light on Volunteerism
|
|
April is National Volunteer Month – a month dedicated to honoring all the volunteers in our communities as well as encouraging volunteerism. In 2021 (2022 data not out yet), 60.7 million people in America volunteered contributing $4.1 billion in economic value and 2.2 million of those individuals live in Ohio.
So, what keeps our volunteers coming back? How can you keep your volunteers coming back? According to volunteerism statistics, nonprofit organizations are expected to continue experiencing an increased need for volunteers.
Below are ten tips to bolster your volunteer program:
- Explain volunteer opportunities verbally and in writing.
- Have clear expectations of their roles.
- Define timelines – let them know how much of their time is needed.
- Make it easy to get started – provide toolkits to help them complete their work.
- Show your appreciation! - Take time to celebrate and recognize those who went above and beyond.
- Reflect & evaluate – ask your volunteer about their experience and identify ways to improve.
- Be real about the optimal number of volunteers needed – remember we still have other responsibilities that need to be balanced alongside managing volunteers.
- Those involved in informal volunteer activities (helping a neighbor, picking up garbage, running a carpool, etc.) are great prospects for formal volunteering with your organization.
- Don’t assume that an individual’s strength or profession is the same space in which they want to volunteer.
- Be a volunteer yourself.
There is not much difference between the cultivation and stewardship activities that we practitioners use on donors versus the ones used with volunteers. These tips can help strengthen your volunteer experience and maximize the value (nearly $30/hour) we receive when someone says “Yes!”
first glance, the tech industry’s sleek image and the granola-heavy nonprofit world don’t immediately go hand in hand.

3 ways to stand out with impact Thinking of fundraising as a form of sales can feel like a splash of cold water. The analogy reminds us of fundraising’s transactional nature — the donor is the buyer, and you, the nonprofit representative, are the seller. But this analogy can also be empowering.
