Want to Win More Grants for Your Nonprofit?
|
|
As we kick off the new calendar/fiscal year, it's a great time to evaluate revenue streams and update funding goals for your organization!
And grants are an excellent source of diversified funding, as they offer a broad range of possibilities and consistent revenue streams. Establishing and maintaining a strong relationship with a grantmaker can help turn grants into a reliable source of revenue to aid growth.
However, grant writing can be resource-intensive, making acquiring grants challenging and time consuming.
But, that doesn’t mean grants aren’t worth the time and effort! A recent study found that 40% of funders aren't giving as much as they could be, meaning most nonprofits have high-capacity donors that they may not be aware of, and who are ready to be discovered - which presents a huge opportunity. With an effective process, organizations can discover opportunities that they have not yet tapped into, and ultimately move these donors into greater levels of giving.
So how do we achieve this? The process of finding these donors starts with prospecting and prioritizing, which requires asking the right questions and having the right information.
Data about funders is abundant, but siloed, making prospecting and researching oftentimes time-consuming and challenging. To accelerate this process, we suggest taking a step back and thinking about things from a new perspective.
First, think about what information is actually important. Every nonprofit has different needs, therefore the questions you need to answer about a funder may differ.
Questions that can be used as a starting point include:
● What are the giving patterns of potential donors?
● Who were the past grantees? What types of projects were funded?
● Where geographically do potential donors focus their giving?
● Does your organization have the bandwidth to write a proposal AND meet reporting requirements?
Looking for more questions to consider?
Next, it’s important to consider where you’re looking for funding opportunities, and how funder data is being presented to you. For many, Google is an obvious go-to search engine for this task, but it’s 2023 - there are better prospect research strategies and solutions that allow you to secure good fit funders faster AND easier!
We recommend opting for data sources that provide only active opportunities that you can apply for, and which integrate multi-year foundation tax data (990s) to provide a clear picture of potential funders, their giving priorities, and the likelihood for a good fit.
Of course, that is oftentimes easier said than done.
In this session, you’ll learn:
● Why grants are so powerful, especially heading into the first half of 2023
● What is prospect research and why is it important
● 16 key questions to ask yourself to evaluate good fit funders
● How to start finding good fit funders fast using Instrumentl
