When Can Volunteers Lead?

Leadership has been a prominent topic in the nonprofit community, so it’s surprising there has not been more discussion about leadership applied to volunteerism.

Let’s consider two unexpected aspects of volunteers as leaders. First, many nonprofit staff members serve as volunteer board members at other nonprofits. Second, most nonprofit boards are made up of volunteers. How can these volunteer board members lead effectively?


Nonprofit Staff Who Serve on Other Nonprofits’ Boards

Many nonprofit staff volunteering as board members of other nonprofits means they are serving as leaders at other organizations, often in a related field. For example, a YMCA manager might serve on the board of a girls’ science program, or a museum staffer might serve on the board of a community theater.


There are multiple aspects of value here.


Managers and executives who serve on boards of other organizations learn more about how boards can work, through both positive and negative examples. They witness firsthand the limits of board influence on executives. They can learn how executives can support board leadership or, conversely, how executives choose to recruit boards that simply rubber stamp decision-making. As executives, they also learn how to better collaborate with their own boards or advisory committees.


Serving on a board, in short, gives people a wider external view, outside the bounds of a single organization. This is something that is seldom discussed in management teams. For example, a manager who works for a childcare organization in Chinatown, while serving as a board member of a housing organization that serves the same neighborhood, will likely gain a broader perspective about local families that could help inform program delivery at their childcare nonprofit.


Additionally, management team members who serve on boards get to see different models for how executive directors think and act. This can help them get better at working with their own executives and give them a sense of a greater range of choices in how to support them.


Turning Potential Gain to Actual Gain

So, the theoretical case for encouraging nonprofit staff to volunteer on the board of other nonprofits is strong. How is this potential benefit converted into a real benefit?


For nonprofit leaders who serve in a supervisory capacity, one strategy is to encourage staff to volunteer on a board as part of their professional development. A manager or executive director can even suggest boards to join and perhaps make introductions.

The Victorian at Riverside, an assisted living community in Covington, Kentucky, is grateful to receive a generous grant of $15,000 from the Edelweiss Foundation to provide meals for the residents.


The K.A.S.S.I.E. Project received a $1000 grant from Magnified Giving thanks to Withrow HS Girls to Women. Thank you to Magnified Giving for continuously supporting the efforts of non-profits in our communities.


Mill Creek Alliance is thrilled to have received a $2500 grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation's Summertime Kids fund in support of its' Mahketewah Anglers & Mill Creek Summer Explorers programs.


The Victorian at Riverside in Covington, KY, is proud and grateful to announce they have received a $50,000 award from The Greater Cincinnati Foundation to carry on the mission of their 140 years in business Assisted Living Residence benefiting seniors. 


Purcell Marian High School’s annual Grand Event Revelry in Red and new after-party event Grand Finale raised a record-breaking $260,000. The sold-out celebration was backed by over 30 sponsors, 75% of whom were alumni or alumni-owned businesses. The fundraiser continues to grow as a beloved tradition in support of the school’s mission and students.


Central Clinic Behavioral Health (CCBH) has been awarded a grant of $150,000 from bi3 and will use the funding to support its Child & Family Treatment Center (CTFC). Their investment allows the CFTC to enhance capacity and support access to culturally competent behavioral health services for children, youth, and families.


Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) has unveiled a bold new strategic business plan and ambitious new investment goals — totaling $1 billion over the next decade — designed to meet the complex and growing needs of the community. The region’s leading community foundation is realigning and amplifying action plans; refining desired outcomes and measurable goals, along with a path to achieve them; reorganizing internally and adding vital new leadership positions; and identifying additional philanthropic resources, including more national partnerships. It’s all in service to creating maximum impact in the community.


Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is grateful to Inspiration Foundation for a $4,800 grant through a partnership with VisionServe Alliance. It will be used as designated to provide demonstration equipment for people who are blind or visually impaired.


CABVI invites our community to join us for Fun Fest 2025, Saturday, June 7, 11:00am-3:00pm, Washington Park. This is a free and accessible event benefiting our mission of empowering people who are blind or visually impaired with opportunities to seek independence. This family-friendly event will feature a DJ, food trucks, games, and prizes for kids and adults and much more. Green Umbrella is accepting applications for their Climate Action Fellowship program for governments in Greater Cincinnati communities. The fellowship pairs undergraduate and graduate students, and individuals who want to pivot careers into the sustainability space, with Green Umbrella government members to develop practical plans and solutions for a changing climate.


Aviatra Accelerators announces the opening of applications for its 2025 MOMENTUM© Accelerator, a comprehensive business education program designed to help early and mid-stage women entrepreneurs build profitable, sustainable businesses. This 12-week, in-person program is for women entrepreneurs with at least one year in business and $50,000+ in total revenue, ready to build on their momentum. Applications are open through May 30, 2025.


As part of his commitment to ensuring all Ohio children have the opportunity to build strong foundations for success, Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) Director Kara B. Wente announced the availability of $5 million in grant funding to support training for teachers at early care and education programs on how to harness the Science of Reading to enrich their young students’ literacy skills from an early age. MAKE A DIFFERENCE

People Working Cooperatively (PWC) is seeking volunteers for its Repair Affair in June. PWC's 43rd annual Repair Affair is an opportunity for volunteers to use their home repair skills to provide important home maintenance services to seniors, people with disabilities, families and veterans living on low or fixed incomes. Last year, more than 400 volunteers painted exteriors, repaired walkways, cleaned up landscaping, and more at 47 homes throughout the region.
