A New School Year is Here. Are We Ready?
|
|
Going back-to-school is not just about getting our children ready, but parents and caregivers alike. Gathering school supplies, organizing backpacks, finding clothes that fit and planning lunches are likely the easiest and most straight forward of the back-to-school activities. The commencement of a new school year brings with it a blend of excitement and potential anxiety and pressure, particularly for those facing life stressors or other challenges. The intricacies introduced by the pandemic have further complicated this reality, underscoring the significance of integrating actions that cultivate children's mental and emotional preparedness alongside their physical readiness for school.
By focusing on your childās mental and emotional health, you ensure a smooth transition from a typical summer day to structured school routines with imposed academic expectations. Providing more targeted academic and emotional tools will nurture self-confidence, reduce anxiety, promote a positive mindset, and improve emotional intelligence. will prepare them for a successful school year. By combining tangible preparations, the cultivation of emotional and mental health and a good adult support system, you are fostering academic success and emotional resilience.
The ABCs of Emotional Readiness
Alleviating Anxiety: Returning to school after a long break with a fear of the unknown ā new teachers, classmates, and subjects ā can lead to nervousness and apprehension. Discuss what they can expect, talk about the fun and exciting aspects of school, and reassure them that itās normal to be nervous.
Building Confidence
Mental and emotional preparation also involves helping children build their confidence. Reinforce their strengths, encourage them to express their fears and worries, and provide positive reinforcement to help them build resilience and confidence.
Creating a Growth Mindset
Encourage them to see mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures. By teaching children to embrace a growth mindset, parents and educators can help students become more engaged, motivated, and successful in their learning experiences.
Developing Healthy Routines
Ensuring children have a consistent sleep schedule, balanced diet, and regular physical activity are key aspects of mental and emotional preparation. Good health habits support brain function, mood regulation, and overall well-being.
Encouraging Social Skills
Preparing children to interact effectively with their peers and teachers can help them feel more comfortable and engaged in the school setting. Play dates, sports, and other social activities can help children develop and maintain their social skills.
What if my child is on medication? What do I need to know?
The US is experiencing a prescription drug shortage with more and more medication in short supply for longer stretches of time. Those medications include antibiotics, ADHD medication and more. Originally related to supply-chain issues, the shortage of medication is now driven by increased demand. In February of this year, NBC reported that, after nearly six months of these shortages, millions of Americans had already been affected. For children, the shortage has renewed challenges with focus and behavior, leading to difficulty with school performance, as well as disruption for families. Be proactive and work with your school, pharmacist, and doctor to stay ahead of your childrenās medications. If medication is to be provided at school, initiate contact with the school nurse or designated professional now. When children who take medication return to school with clear communication, careful planning, and cooperation with the school, along with the other tips above, parents and caregivers have a better guarantee that their child will have a safe, enjoyable, and productive school year.
What other advice do you have for me as a parent or caregiver?
Remember that being a parent comes with its challenges. Take things one step at a time, don't hesitate to ask for or get help when you need it and give yourself some grace. Remember that each child is unique, so itās best to tailor your actions, words and mannerisms to their individual needs, preferences and personality. Providing this level of support, encouragement, and a safe space for them to grow and learn will set the foundation for a successful school year and contribute to their overall well-being.
