Giving Tuesday CEO Talks about Campaign, Younger Donors
|
|
In the past 10 years, charities have made splashy fundraising appeals and raked in billions in donations on GivingTuesday, which takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
Last year, American donors gave nearly $2.5 billion amid growing needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the nation’s racial reckoning. How much money will flood into charities this Tuesday is anyone’s guess.
The giving campaign was launched in 2012 as a way to get people to donate to charity at a time when they were already spending money on the holiday shopping season. The 92nd Street Y, a community center in New York City, came up with the idea and developed it until two years ago, when a separate organization called GivingTuesday took up the mantle to organize the giving day.
Charities typically host fundraisers, events, and use the hashtag on social media to garner donations, which have increased throughout the years. But it’s not a fundraising day — it’s a generosity movement, said Asha Curran, the CEO of the organization that promotes the campaign.
Curran says people are gearing up to participate in ways that don’t involve giving money. For example, she says more than 40,000 young people worldwide have indicated to GivingTuesday’s youth-oriented GivingTuesdaySpark program they’re doing “acts of giving and acts of kindness” on Tuesday.
The AP recently talked with her about the campaign, younger donors and other things. The interview was edited for clarity and length.
Q: The campaign is marking its 10th year. Do you feel like it’s accomplishing what it initially set out to do?
A: I think it’s accomplishing a great deal more than it set out to do. In 2012, the idea was really a relatively simple one: a hashtag to encourage people to think about giving back after two days of consumption. It was very U.S. and fundraising focused.
Today, there is an official country movement in 81 countries, the most recent being Peru, South Sudan, Greece and Nepal. People around the world are meeting generosity efforts and using the day as an opportunity to be creative, and think about generosity in very expansive ways. None of those are things that we could have foreseen in the beginning.
Q: Do you believe the level of giving that was seen last year will be sustained? Read more...

Sponsor Insight from Gilman Partners
Are You Ready for a Career Change to Nonprofit?
By Barry Elkus, Partner and Co-Leader of the Nonprofit Leadership Practice at Gilman Partners
It’s no secret that the pandemic has led many of us to reflect on our priorities and consider new career paths. For some, this has led to exploring the nonprofit sector. “Maybe I can find something that has more meaning and still leverages my skillset.”
We’ve seen many professionals make successful transitions from a corporate career to key leadership roles at a nonprofit. Chances are they’ve been asked several of these questions along the way:
• Do you have an authentic connection to the organization’s mission? Have you volunteered or have a personal story that connects you to their work? Follow your passion.
• Can you afford a lower salary or forgo an annual bonus? Nonprofit salaries are usually lower and bonuses are usually smaller or not available. Chances are, you’ll work harder and make less.
• Do you consider yourself scrappy and resourceful? Can you wear many hats and offer to help outside your area of expertise? All hands on deck.
• Are you available to work occasional evenings and weekends? Board meetings, networking events, and fundraisers can make for a busy week.
• Are you comfortable asking others for money? Even if you’re not in the development department, many roles have a fundraising component as donations are the lifeblood of most nonprofits.
• Have you worked in a diverse and inclusive organization? Can you embrace a culture that values diversity and is working to be equitable and inclusive in hiring, staff development, and at the Board? DEI is more than a passing trend at many nonprofits.
• Have you been a volunteer or served on a nonprofit Board? These can be great ways to see if an organization is a good potential fit and to demonstrate your commitment.
Many nonprofits are looking for talent to fill important leadership positions. Are you ready?

American Marketing Association Cincinnati is launching a new service that matches teams of talented marketing professionals with nonprofits and startups on marketing projects. Applications are being accepted for nonprofits, startups, and marketing volunteers right now (through Dec. 6). Applications will be reviewed in December, and the projects will begin in early January. This is a great way to stretch scarce resources and uplift our community. More information here.
GiveCamp is a nationwide effort that brings together a community of volunteers to donate their time and talents to build the technical resources and capacity of local non-profit organizations. The projects have ranged from website rebuilds to iPhone and Android applications. It is estimated that the projects created at Give Camp would typically cost each non-profit $10,000 - $15,000. The efficiencies the solutions create – often reducing the paperwork and staff time needed to complete processes – means Give Camp creates value beyond the market cost of the projects themselves. Southwest Ohio GiveCamp is now accepting non-profit applications. The initial application is a simple form found here along with additional information.

Will congress act to reform philanthropy? While this may surprise those who follow philanthropy’s every move, Congress only rarely passes laws that directly regulate philanthropy. The last truly foundational law regarding philanthropy was passed in 1969. That was the law that mandated a five-percent minimum payout from private foundations, among other provisions (such as prohibitions against self-dealing).

Combating the great resignation with an invitation conversation HR and business leader responsibilities require that they attack a problem as quickly as possible with the best solution they can find. The term "combating” highlights a first response to problems that many of us have: The need to fix a threat to organizational stability with all speed and force to solve the issue so that normal functioning may prevail.
