SPECIAL ORDER & SHIPPING DEADLINES
If we don't have the book you want
(and it's still in print)
we can get it for you! The following dates are guidelines for when you can order books from our store and still pick them up by December 24:

Mon., Dec. 3:
The last day for foreign book orders and hard-to-find books (the ones we have to get from the publisher directly).

Mon., Dec. 10:
The last day for books shipping from our "secondary warehouses" -- these are books that are in-print, but not very common. They're not stocked at all our distributor warehouses, so they take longer to get.

Tue, Dec. 18:
Books shipping from the nearby "primary" warehouses -- these are books that are new or more common.

Fri., Dec. 21:
The last deliveries to our store arrive. Books will be checked in that afternoon, and will be available for pickup that evening and until we close at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 24.

When in doubt,
give us a call or ask us at the store!
We can tell you in a minute or less when we'd expect your special order to arrive, and help you get it placed on time.

A NOTE ON SHIPPING
As you may know, we also ship books out. We recommend USPS Priority Mail, which takes 2-3 days. If we are shipping your books for you, here are recommended deadlines for you to order so that your books arrive by December 24:
Mon., Dec. 10:
The last day to arrange for shipping via USPS Media Mail. Those of you who get free Media Mail shipping with your Friends With Benefits membership, this is the date to be aware of!

Mon., Dec. 17:
The last day to arrange for shipping via USPS Priority Mail.

Obvious disclaimer: Things like weather patterns sometimes affect transit times, especially when a package is going cross-country. We've put in a tiny bit of wiggle room on these deadlines, but we can't make any guarantees re: arrival dates. Get started earlier than this, if you can!

Kerry's View From The Skylight

 kerry photo

Why there are some days I feel like throwing in the towel

  • some book world analysts are predicting that e-books will soon comprise half of all books sold
  • the 7-Eleven in the next block now sports what seems like a wall of Amazon customer 'lockers'
  • I happen upon websites of authors for whom we're doing the book launch event, and see instructions to pre-order the book from Amazon

Why I know it's worth it after all

  • our neighborhood is full of fascinating folks who love real books
  • I get to see faces light up when people find just the right title
  • 1,000 people have joined our Friends With Benefits member program
  • our cat Franny occasionally deigns to show herself
  • we are able to sell ebooks, too - at competitive prices! (to read on Kobos, Nooks, iPads, smart phones and pretty much anything except a Kindle, which has a closed format)
  • a neighborhood couple creates our holiday village/train window display every year - just as a gift to the community
  • we meet wonderful authors - and introduce them to new audiences
  • we get to make fun/crazy displays (thanks, Frieda, Jenn, Dan and all)
  • we're booksellers at an exciting, challenging time - when bookselling and publishing are in the news almost daily and no one is sure what the future bodes.  To me it indicates how important books and reading still are - and how meaningful our task!!

Have a wonderful December...

KOBO E-READERS
 NOW IN THE STORE

That's right!  Skylight is one of the many independent bookstores which have teamed up with Kobo
(through the American Booksellers Association) to offer Kobo e-books through our website and Kobo e-readers in our stores.

The Kobo Mini and the Kobo Glo

The Mini is the world's smallest and lightest full-featured reader, an e-ink device with a battery that lasts a whole month before you need to recharge.  It sells for $79.99.

The Kobo Glo offers an amazingly comfortable soft light, so you can read any time of the day or night, without a lamp.  It's a bit bigger and more powerful than the Mini, but still an incredible deal, retailing at $129.99.

The Kobo App
(download from our site)
You can also read Kobo e-books on any device (except a Kindle), and they have millions of titles in lots of languages, priced competitively (some are even free!).

Sign up for your Kobo account/download a Kobo app on our website by clicking here!

If you sign up for your Kobo e-book account through our website, Skylight gets a cut of the profit every time you buy an e-book through that account, no matter what device you're reading on. It doesn't cost you a dime or a minute more, and you can read e-books while still supporting your local bricks-and-mortar indie bookstore. Follow the link above this paragraph  to set up your account, then scroll down to get device-specific instructions for how to read Kobo e-books on your Android, iOS, Nook, Sony, or other e-reader.

If you buy your Kobo e-reader here, you don't need to do anything special.  Your Mini or Glo has been registered with our store and your account will be linked to us. Need more info?  Check out the Frequently Asked Questions page!  Or click the big blue Kobo logo on the upper right side of our
