Kevin Keller GIVES BACK In A Special Way
P hoto: Kevin Keller sits with Executive Director, Amy Rice and talks about his commitment to being a
blood and platelet donor.

Mr. Kevin Keller is from Downingtown and has been working at Handi-Crafters for  two years. Keller is very focused on his job and his work but once in awhile his  witty sense of humor  sneaks out and then when you do spend a few minutes  talking with Kevin, you also find a very caring individual and someone who  gives back with honor and deep sincerity for others. Keller talks about giving,  he has found that being a blood donor to the American Red Cross is  very important to him so much so  that he has
made a pledge to  contribute regularly and encourages others to do the same.

Keller, started donating blood in 2014. He then realized donating platelets
was a need of the American Red Cross and opted to learn more of what was  required.  He says his interest grew and after consulting with his doctors,
maintaining his iron levels by taking a supplement and eating healthy iron
rich foods he was able to donate platelets. Keller gave six times last year.
and continues to donate blood every two to three weeks. He explains that
giving blood is easy and takes about half-hour to forty-five minutes. Donating platelets takes about 2-3 hours and he must maintain his iron levels to be able to contribute. Kevin is very versed in the process and goes to the
"If my mother and father were alive today, they would probably say;
our son is doing something meaningful with his life, he's helping others."
Both of Keller's parents are deceased from battles with cancer.
"I give back to honor my parents, I think they would be proud."

Kevin also attends St. Peter Catholic Church in Downingtown where he participates in their annual blood drive and their canned-food drives.
Kevin is also a fan of the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania where he contributes whatever he can. Great work, Kevin!

WIOA Legislation UPDATE

Dear Family, Friends and Advocates of Supported Employment,

A brief update on WIOA. Despite all of our efforts, the wonderful stories from caring families and the efforts of many others across the Country, WIOA officially entered the federal registry and became "law" on July 22, 2016.  We are told efforts will continue to soften the effect or maybe even reverse some of the parts of the plan that were added on.

Here at Handi-Crafters, we are strategizing what we need to do to be in compliance and continue to offer services to those who need us. Politically we are shifting our focus to our State Legislators. We have shared our concerns and your stories with our local elected officials. And we have invited each one to come for a tour and an opportunity to meet our wonderful workers. As issues come up in the legislature, we want to be sure those who have the power and position to effect change are very familiar with Handi-Crafters and all of our wonderful workers who choose to be here.

Again, thank you all for your dedication and your amazing stories. Please keep them coming as we are using them to spread the word: CHOICE.

My Job! My Choice!

Amy Rice
Executive Director

We are enjoying our time with four wonderful young ladies who have spent the summer working at Handi-Crafters and participating in the 2016 Coatesville Youth Initiative (CYI). We welcome: Julianna, Amariah, Nyshea and Karizma. The ladies have spent 8-weeks on-site learning and assisting with Handi-Crafters skill development workshop program, coaching and "being a friend" to clients, shadowing staff and assisting in the Older Adult Daily Living Center.

The ladies are students at Coatesville High School and were successful applicants in the popular CYI Service Corps program.

The CYI Service Corps program provides opportunities for youth between the ages of 14-18 granting summer employment through placement in a service program with a challenging life and leadership skills development curriculum. Program participants are placed in teams at designated host sites around the County where they participate in full-time, meaningful, direct-service activities. Students must keep a daily log of their activities and send weekly reports, attend mid-way evaluation meetings, submit a personal growth essay and a scrapbook documenting their experience upon completion of the 8-week program.

Handi-Crafters is proud to be a host site and has participated with CYI Service Corps for over a decade
