June 2022

Dear Danielle,

Congratulations to parents, educators, and students for reaching the end of another challenging academic year. Special well-wishes to all the graduating seniors!

To support your needs throughout the summertime, I'm thrilled to announce that our valuable spring symposium training session is available for a limited time! Experience the recording of Dr. Melissa Farrall's full day seminar "Making Sense of Evaluations for Dyslexia" and increase your ability to identify and help struggling students.

Jared Blank's Running The Distance book is a refreshing addition to your summer reading list - a captivating story of overcoming the challenges of dyslexia. All profits from book sales are 100% donated to IDA.

If you or someone you know is looking for help or connection, please check out the Local Support Groups listed on our website, including the TEACHlexia Educator Network, Adult Dyslexia Network, and Student Empowerment Panel. Some group meetings will be continuing during the summer, so please join us!

I wish you a peaceful and restorative summer break.

I am an aspiring Photographer and Graphic Designer who prides herself in originality and authenticity. I am currently a Junior at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego where I continue to pursue my artistic passions and am working towards a degree in Graphic Design with an emphasis in illustration and marketing. Having dyslexia and dysgraphia has made me more aware of ways to make content more easily consumable to a wider variety of people. During the summer and next year, I will be working on my final design portfolio, pursuing an internship, and working on freelance photography and graphic design for independent clients and businesses.

I graduated from Neah-Kah-Nie High School and I am currently attending Western Oregon University and studying to become an elementary school teacher. This summer I am looking forward to being a camp counselor at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in my hometown of Rockaway Beach. I also will be a Peer Advisor at WOU’s Destination Western program. I am involved in my Residence Hall Association, Aspiring Teachers Association, enjoying roller-skating on campus, hiking, and traveling to new places. My personal goal is to become a positive force in all communities I become a part of and no matter what I hope to teach that we all have room to grow and learn from others.

Recruiting Future Board Members

We would love to talk with you!

The Equity in Education committee has come to understand that the purposeful addition to our Board of individuals with a variety of cultural and racial perspectives can lend crucial insight into the barriers that create education inequities in our state, thus empowering our organization to widen our reach to the broadest possible community of struggling readers, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, culture, or race.

Our Board member Larissa Whalen Garfias spearheaded the new FREE DYSLEXIA GUIDE. Watch Larissa's personal interview to hear how she identified needs in the community.
