Are you worried about student writing skills impacted during this time of distance learning? This year's Spring Symposium will help by offering evidence-based, concrete, and targeted strategies for writing. Dr. Haynes will share structured, systematic teaching techniques that make use of the interplay between listening, speaking, and reading, so that struggling writers of any age can learn to write independently and effectively at the word, sentence, micro-discourse, and paragraph levels.
This online interactive presentation will lead educators through supporting all learners with vocabulary and writing skills. Engaging, hands-on self-regulation strategies that tap semantic feature analysis to expand vocabulary and sentence skills will be described. These techniques leverage listening, speaking, reading, and writing modalities, helpful for all learners but essential for those with language-based learning difficulties. The importance of these strategies for micro-discourse and discourse-level tasks are described and will be elaborated on during the day and an outline of a developmentally based instructional sequence of sentence patterns will be provided.

Oregon selected to be part of the initial cohort for the National Center on Accessible Education Materials
|
|
The National Center on Accessible Educational Materials for Learning is a technical assistance center led by CAST and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The Center’s goal is to increase the availability and use of AEM and accessible technologies by individuals with disabilities in early learning, K-12, higher education, and workforce development settings.
We are excited to share that Oregon is one of seven states which has been selected to create a national AEM Cohort. With the Center’s expert assistance, each state in the AEM Cohort will develop a coordinated system for providing AEM and accessible technologies across the continuum of state educational services.
The next step is to identify three school districts that will agree to form and sustain a cross-functional district team to include, at minimum, representation from district administration, educational technology, assistive technology, special education instruction, general education instruction, and a parent or guardian of a student with a disability. At least one district must serve high-needs schools, including those in rural areas and/ or with a high percentage of students from low-income families or traditionally underserved populations.
To learn about the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials, please visit: https://aem.cast.org/
The submission deadline is March 31, 2021.
