ISBT Manuals & Guidelines
This is a new, regular section of the ISBT Connection that we will use for communications about new publications as well as publications that are just being started. Manuals and guidelines are free to current members of ISBT at https://www.isbt.com/resources-manuals-guidelines.asp. Non-members may purchase our publications a la carte using the order form at the bottom of that page, but joining ISBT is the most economical way to gain access to our publications.

ISBT members interested in participating in the development of a new publication or the review of an existing one should contact the Chair or Subcommittee Chair in charge of the working group. If you are not an ISBT member but wish to participate in the writing of a new publication, please click here to join ISBT so that you can contribute to this important work!

Rheometry – New Guideline

The reliable comparisons of rheological data (viscosities of our beverages) that were determined in different laboratories is essential for communication between manufacturers, bottlers, and their customers. Reliable, reproducible bases must be created for this. The focus of this guideline is on a method that includes all steps required to obtain reproducible and comparable measurement results for Newtonian liquids. This new guideline is free to current members of ISBT at https://www.isbt.com/resources-manuals-guidelines.asp

Barriers of Separation – New Working Group

Beverage producers are finding source water quality varying significantly within their specific regions, and even seasonally within the same location. Further, as producers globalize their production, they have to contend with large variations, a growing concern as it most likely exceeds the capability of their standardized water prep unit operations. Additionally, there is a whole slew of regulatory agencies that govern ingredient water region to region, and producers may have their own specifications to maintain consistency of beverage quality globally. So if producers have to cater to a stringent set of water quality parameters but also contend with the disparity of source water quality, how can they achieve consistency? It does not make sense to treat all source water to the utmost level of purity as that is neither economically feasible, nor beneficial from the standpoint of taste or stability. This guideline will look at the various specifications of ingredient water across critical agencies, compare them to the ranges of source water quality available and develop a “plug and play” type of unit operation model with redundancies built in. Using this approach, any producer can evaluate their acceptable ingredient water target spec and source water quality, then assemble an appropriate treatment system using the model put forth in the paper and current commercial treatment options. Members interested in participating in the development of this new publication should contact the Water Quality and Treatment Technical Committee Chair, Sanjay Srivatsa.

Did You Know... about the ISBT?
Logo: In 2001, the first Canadian BevTech was held and was named the “ISBT Toronto Regional Meeting”. Use of the logo began in 2017.

History: In its infancy, BevTech Canada was enthusiastically organized by Edie Zon and Jim Sullivan. When both of these members left the industry, Paulette Vinette, the Executive Director of the Canadian Soft Drink Association, ably assisted ISBT with the next couple of Canadian meetings. Then Anthony Amendola volunteered to help Elizabeth McLeod revive and build BevTech Canada. Currently, Michael Gould and Dave Watson are doing an excellent job of managing a successful and growing Canadian section.
