BevTech Europe 2021 Recap

BevTech Europe 2021 ended up being another virtual conference. Originally, the event was to be held at the Hilton Amsterdam, but this is now post- poned until 2023 in order to accommodate next year’s plan to host BevTech Europe alongside drinktec 2022 in Munich, Germany.
SGS sponsored the conference, the first sponsorship ever for a virtual event!
The theme this year was The Future Landscape of The Beverage Industry. To attract speakers and presenters to the conference, the BevTech Europe Program Committee – with the kind support of Sal Calandra, Brian Stegmann, and Maria Piedad Lopez – organized a free, bite-sized webinar with two guest speakers from FMCG Gurus and Nix and Kix on June 30. This attracted thirteen new members to BevTech Europe 2021!

BevTech Asia Pacific 2021 Recap

The inaugural BevTech Asia Pacific conference registration numbers exceeded expectations!

The first meeting took place virtually on November 10, and tapped into the fastest-growing soft drink market in the world. ISBT emphasized the need for knowledge-sharing in this region, highlighting the wealth of resources available and the value of ISBT membership.

70% of the attendees are potential new ISBT members!

BevTech Asia Pacific was structured so beverage technologists in the region were introduced to the Society, with the primary goals of attracting new members and driving interest to attend future meetings. One of the challenges faced by potential members in the Asia Pacific region is the membership fee. Since this was a first-time event in the region, the ISBT Board made an exception to the membership requirement so that non-members were allowed to attend the event by invitation of the President and Executive Director. They were able to attend the sessions and get a taste of what ISBT can offer. Over 100 people registered for the event, exceeding the expectations of the Program Committee for this first event.

UPC Codes: When a supermarket executive visited Drexel University, looking for a way to encode product information, graduate student Woodland hoped to find a solution. Sitting on a beach in Miami one day in 1949 during a visit to his grandfather, he drew four lines in the sand. “I poked my four fingers into the sand and for whatever reason — I didn’t know — I pulled my hand toward me and drew four lines,” Woodland told Smithsonian Magazine in 1999. I said, “Golly! Now I have four lines, and they could be wide lines and narrow lines instead of dots and dashes [as in Morse Code].'” This inspiration led to the development and use of UPC codes, EAN codes, and finally, to GTIN codes.
