PFAS - New Best Practice

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are now recognized as trace pollutants in a variety of water sources that may be used by the beverage industry. Many agencies and regions are beginning to set limits on permitted levels of such compounds in ingredient water. The purpose of this Best Practice is to provide the reader with a general knowledge of these contaminants as well as insight into current regulations, analytical capabilities, and monitoring approaches. The document discusses current treatment options available for beverage ingredient water supplies and wastewater discharge. It should be recognized that PFAS regulations and treatment technologies are rapidly changing and that this Best Practice discusses what is currently state-of-the-art , so there would likely be updates in the near future. The scope of this Best Practice is to establish definition, significance, regulation, treatment options, and general recommendations for beverage producers should they encounter measurable quantities of PFAS in their processes.

Education Enables Creative Thinking

The “Hee Haw” challenge: how do you produce an hour-long TV show for 30 years, using a large cast whose members each have multiple broadcast engagements? Bring the cast together for one 6-week period and film the entire year at once!
  • The show, which ran from 1969 – 1997, had many standard short skits, so filming these back-to-back with no costume, background, or music changes (but several versions) could be done quickly.
  • It was filmed in Nashville, so when music groups were in town, they would record a video of their new releases. Done that way, only one “regular” cast member was needed to introduce the act, helping to give the show a “fresh look” every week.
  • To keep current with “happening events” during the year, any cast members who were available could do an added skit to keep the show topical.

Additional education can make you a better and more creative problem-solver!
