Greetings!

Welcome to our May newsletter! It's been a busy month of connecting with educators, school nutrition and community partners to share about the life-changing, planet-saving power of eating plants — especially beans, the healthy, Earth-friendly protein. We're also incredibly proud to share our Annual Report (fiscal year ending 3/31), an look back over an incredible 12 months of education and outreach!

Celebration Tasting Stations at School

This past month, we brought our Celebration Tasting Stations to four more schools (3 Oceanside, 1 Fallbrook), reaching over 2,000 more students with our 'Plant Power!' message! We decorated with an Earth Day theme to align and enrich lessons from our Cool Beans from Around the World Curriculum.

Our fun and engaging stations featured rainforest-themed decorations, games, music and most popular--a big stuffed jaguar! Students sampled bean pupusas from South America—and sales skyrocketed! Each student also went home with a Cool Bean fun fact & recipe card, to bring the message home to families.

We're so grateful to our donors for making these events possible. It's been such a joy working with our school nutrition partners to help promote bean-based lunch entrees, celebrate cultural diversity, and encourage students to try new, healthy and Earth-friendly meals!

Earth Month Recap

We had an exciting and busy Earth Month! Check out our Instagram video for fun clips and photos! Thank you JIMBO'S for donating 250 cans of Westbrae organic beans, that we gave away as prizes for Cool Bean trivia--helping our community to know that we can make every day Earth Day by choosing beans for healthy, planet-friendly protein!

In addition to our Celebration Tasting Stations at schools, library afterschool program, and special events like Girl Scout World Thinking Day, we participated in seven community events throughout Earth Month, including high school and college Earth Day events! Cool Beans 😎🫘

Calls to ACTION, Help Make a Difference

Farm Bill. It just passed the House on April 30 and now heads to the Senate. Buried in the bill, is a provision called the Save Our Bacon Act, that would completely nullify California's Proposition 12 — the 2018 law that bans the sale of pork and veal kept in extreme confinement.

If the provision passes, it will set a scary precedent that any state agriculture protection law can be wiped out at the federal level.

Two quick actions:

1.  Call your Senators using the Action for Animals app — it takes 2 minutes and connects directly to their offices. Download here:

Or you can also directly call the congressional switchboard - 202-224-3121

2.  Click here to send a quick & easy email (pre-written) to both senators.

Plant Powered School Meals Pilot Act

Join us in taking action for the Plant Powered School Meals Pilot Act (H.R.5867/S.3669), federal legislation that will create a pilot grant program to help schools provide healthy, Earth-friendly plant-based meals and remove barriers for students to access non-dairy milk.

You can make a difference by contacting Congress or signing up to attend virtual Hill meetings with your Senators & Representatives. The HKHP team is excited to be meeting with our Representatives in California and Oregon this month!
