Volunteer Highlight
Olga Pulgar-Vidal
We are so lucky to have Olga Pulgar-Vidal volunteering with our Brown Station Elementary School bilingual program for first graders. Using the online e-library, BenchMark Universe, Olga reads with the children in Spanish. In addition, Olga has introduced the children to Spanish songs, which they sing together. They also use “Readers Theater,” an interactive approach in which children take turns reading characters’ lines. Olga says she is very impressed with the school’s bilingual program because children of all backgrounds are learning Spanish with a correct accent.
Olga is also volunteering with the Interages Thriving Germantown program. Thriving Germantown volunteers tutor children who are referred for specific academic help and work directly with the family and child. Olga is tutoring an eight-year-old boy, whose parents are from Central America, using materials provided by Interages and those she has created herself.
Olga has a background in dentistry and public health education, including the implementation, coordination, and evaluation of public health projects and programs for underserved and minority groups. She holds graduate and professional degrees from universities in Mexico, Sweden, Argentina, and Peru.
