THE INTERAGES CONNECTOR
STAYING CONNECTED WHILE STAYING HOME
Staying in Touch

Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,

The saying goes, "necessity is the mother of all invention." During this time of change, we have looked to alternatives and solutions. Volunteering has taken innovative directions, including virtual volunteering.

Not only is virtual volunteering an answer to our social distance, it brings its own benefits.

Virtual volunteering is flexible and less time-intensive. So many people want to volunteer and intend to volunteer but, under normal circumstances busy schedules and family obligations can take up one's time. Now, virtual volunteering offers flexibility. No need to travel to volunteer. One can do so from home.

Virtual volunteering is also accessible regardless of one's abilities. There is no barrier for someone who may have difficulty walking or driving. It empowers a wider group of volunteers.

Do you have an experience as a virtual volunteer? We would love to hear from you. Please contact Indira Dingledine at idingledine@accessjca.org.

Watch a video of Kay Klass speak to her experience as an Interages volunteer and virtual volunteering. Click Here

For a number of years, Kay Klass has been an Interages volunteer. Most recently, she provided virtual math tutoring for a 7th grader of the Neelsville Middle School in Gaithersburg. For the program, The Heyman Interages Center partnered with the organization IDENTITY that serves Latino students.

IDENTITY provided Zoom training to our volunteers and accessible math assignments. For 5 weeks, our volunteers virtually tutored the students.

We thank you Kay!

Interages Volunteer Opportunities!

We are excited to let you know about a new, exciting opportunity to support adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The Heyman Interages Center is now partnering with SEEC. SEEC respects and assists people with developmental disabilities as they direct their lives towards work, relationships, recreation, and personal development.

Interages volunteers can help by:
  • Co-Facilitating virtual Hangouts in which SEEC staff members and participants discuss a variety of topics.
  • Speaking about one's own job experience with a small group of adults with IDD
  • Being on a panel of mock interviewers interviewing participants, then highlight strengths and areas of improvement

Volunteers are needed for a weekly or bi-weekly participation for one month or more.

One ship drives east, and another drives west,
with the self-same winds that blow.
’Tis the set of the sails, and not the gales,
that determine the way she goes.

Like the winds of the seas are the ways of fate,
as we voyage along through life.
’Tis the set of the soul that determines the goal,
and not the calm nor the strife.
