Staying in Touch
Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,
We at Interages are excited to be back from the holidays and are developing new volunteer programs. We are fortunate in connecting with very helpful community partners including MCPS principals, teachers, reading specialists, technology advisors, and others. They are all so helpful in the navigation of virtual opportunities. Also, we are grateful to have volunteers helping us forge a path through the puzzle of virtual programming and providing feedback and ideas.

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL
Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth?
Build relationships with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff. You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. Lastly, if you know someone else who might be interested, please send them our way!
Thanks for your help and support!

Interages Interview Program
As we mentioned in a past newsletter, Interages had such success having a youth conduct a Zoom interview of the Interages Founder, Austin Heyman, that we started an interviewing program. At this time, five students, grades 7-12, were recruited to conduct interviews. The students earn Service Learning hours for their time preparing and interviewing. Thanks go to Kay Klass, Interages volunteer, who trained the youth on how to conduct interviews.
Gabriella, a wonderful volunteer and high school student, is one of the youth in the Interages Interview program. She interviewed the Montgomery County Police Chief, Marcus Jones. To view the interview click here. The Office of the Chief has responsibility for the overall management, direction, planning, and coordination of all Montgomery County Department of Police programs and operations. Here, also, is a message from the Chief.

TUTOR TRAINING WAS A SUCCESS
Earlier this month, JCA Interages co-hosted a 10- hour Orton-Gillingham (OG) style training experience that was taught by a well-versed trainer. The training was delivered in 5 two-hour Zoom sessions over the course of two weeks. Orton-Gillingham is the oldest and most well known instructional method used with students who have dyslexia or difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing. While the training experience was not official OG certification training, the goal of the class was to offer participants a variety of OG-style tools to use during one-on-one tutoring. Some of the many topics that were covered follow: reading acquisition in all learners, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Due to the overwhelming amount of positive feedback at the conclusion of the class, we are considering offering it again soon. Please let us know if this would be of interest to you.

Two pilot programs underway
Brown Station Elementary
Among a number of new programs, Interages started a new program with Brown Station Elementary School. Volunteers are reading virtually to 6-year-old 1st graders using the e-library of The Benchmark Universe platform. Teachers and the reading specialist guide the volunteers regarding unit and level-appropriate book ideas.
Brown Station Elementary has a Two-Way Immersion Program (Spanish/English), so our volunteers are English speakers and Bilingual (Spanish/English) speakers.
Two-Way Immersion is an educational model in which students develop better levels of speaking, reading, writing, and listening in English and in Spanish. The students will typically receive lessons from two teachers; one providing academic instruction in English, and the other providing academic instruction in Spanish.
In addition to the Brown Station Elementary reading program, Interages also has new virtual reading programs with Harmony Hills Elementary and Glen Haven Elementary.

Redland Middle School.
Interages volunteers will be working with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders of Redland Middle School. Using virtual technology for both Zoom and access to online course materials, the volunteers will help students with science, history, and math/algebra.
