Staying in Touch

Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,

Well, it's been three months since Maryland shut down because of the pandemic. We hope that you, your families and loved ones are well. We also hope that in some small way, this newsletter is providing you with helpful information and resources while delivering some levity.

We continue to explore ways you can volunteer and support children and families. In a few weeks, we will send our current and most recent volunteers a survey to learn more about your preferences, skills, and concerns regarding future volunteer experiences.

We welcome your suggestions, feedback, contributions and brief fun and/or informative videos to enhance this newsletter. If you want to share a story or brief video about your volunteer experience with JCA Interages or how you are coping with the pandemic, please submit your video to Kathi Dennis, Senior Program Director at Kdennis@accessjca.org
Let's Stand Together
The past couple of weeks, the images of police brutality, peaceful protests, riots, looting, memorial services and funerals have been overwhelming. The following is a a collection of mostly positive images of protests and the Black Lives Matters movement.

  • This video shows that the world is watching and supporting our fight for social justice.
  • The Smithsonian Magazine showcases how street artists are responding to the killing of George Floyd.
  • Artnet also highlights street artists around the world paying tribute to George Floyd.
  • CNN has collected these photographs of mostly peaceful protests around the country. Some images may be disturbing but they are a necessary part of the story.
Welcome to Our New Volunteer Manager

Hello JCA Interages volunteers. I am Indira Dingledine, the new Volunteer Manager of the Heyman Interages Center. As Volunteer Manager, I will be attracting, recruiting, and retaining volunteers. Service-minded; I value connecting with and supporting fellow service-minded people.

Formerly, I was the Director of the Morris Cafritz Center for Community Service (MCCCS) of The Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center. The MCCCS provided volunteer opportunities across the DC area. I am also an artist and through online technology, I use my paintings as textile designs for scarves and throws.

Originally from Albany, NY, my husband and I enjoy living in Glover Park, DC. I am excited about joining the JCA Interages team and look forward to meeting and getting to know all of the JCA Interages volunteers.

It's been such an honor to have worked at JCA Heyman Interages Center as a SHARE and Makeover Madness program coordinator for seven years, and to see first-hand the beauty and the importance of fostering intergenerational connections. I've learned so much from so many people along the way, and I'm so proud to have contributed in a small way to support the vision that Austin Heyman put forth decades ago. I will never forget it.

A Message from Vicki Thomas

Dear JCA Interages Volunteers,

I joined JCA Interages in October 2015 after retiring from MCPS as a school counselor in 2013. I have enjoyed working with the students, teachers and wonderful volunteers.You made my job worthwhile, interesting and enjoyable. I am so happy that I was able to connect you with meaningful and rewarding volunteer experiences. I will always remember your kindness, generosity, wisdom, sense of humor, dedication and support for your students, community, JCA Interages and me.

I have also been blessed to work with a wonderful team of caring, smart, dedicated, talented and skillful women at JCA Interages. I am honored and grateful that I was able to work with them. Knowing them has made me a better person.

I don't have any immediate plans for the future. The pandemic will determine what activities I am allowed to do and feel comfortable doing. For now, I am looking forward to life without work.
