JCA LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
|
|
JCA is grateful for the steady leadership of David Gamse, CEO Emeritus who retired at the end of 2020 after 30 years of dedicated service that has benefited the senior community throughout the Greater Washington area. To view comments by Montgomery County’s County Executive, Marc Elrich and County Council President Tom Hucker, and US Representative for District 7, Congressman Jamie Raskin, about Gamse’s legacy on the quality of life among seniors, view here.
|
|
Also JCA will miss the creativity, fundraising, and management contributions of Micki Gordon, JCA's co-CEO & Senior Director of Development who retired January 29th after 29 years of serving the agency.
|
|
On January 1, 2021 JCA welcomed the leadership and tremendous nonprofit and management talent of CEO Shane Rock, his broad experience can be viewed in his profile:

Interages Interview Program
As we mentioned in a past newsletter, Interages had such success having a young person conduct a Zoom interview of the Interages Founder, Austin Heyman, that we started an interviewing program. At this time, five students, grades 7-12, have been recruited to conduct interviews. The students earn Service Learning hours for their time preparing and interviewing. Thanks go to Kay Klass, Interages volunteer, who trained the youth on how to conduct interviews.
In this issue, we highlight Hannah, a lively volunteer and 7th-grade student who interviewed Max Levitt, Founder- Leveling the Playing Field. Leveling the Playing Field gives underprivileged children the opportunity to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of youth sports participation. They do this by giving completely free used and excess sporting equipment to community groups, youth leagues, and schools serving low-income communities. Those donations allow programs to reallocate funds, lower registration fees, expand their scholarship offerings, enhance their existing athletic program, or develop new ones. New Interages staff, Dana Adams Tate, leads a Book Club
We would like to welcome Dana Adams Tate to the Heyman Interages team. Dana, who has been with Jewish Council for the Aging’s Kensington Club for 7 years, joined Interages last December. She is a former literature teacher and will be using her experience to help coordinate JCA/MCPL book clubs and various intergenerational programs. She and her husband have four children (two in high school and two in college), and during leisure and vacation time, Dana enjoys reading, hiking the trails and mountains in her home state of Maine, and facilitating poetry and creative writing classes for older adults in the metro DC area.
Among other programming, Dana will be leading the A Good Kind of Trouble Intergenerational Book Club.
This program brings together staff and volunteers (age 50+) from the Jewish Council for the Aging Heyman Interages® Center, Montgomery County Public Library staff, and 7th and 8th-grade students.
The Intergenerational Book Club has several goals, some of which follow:
· to connect all participants to meaningful reading materials;
· to create meaningful, stimulating conversations; and
· to provide opportunities for young people and older adults to connect with a diverse group so that each participant can learn from each other.
Students will be asked to write a short essay, create a poster or flyer from what they learned from the book. Six SSL hours will be awarded to each student if he/she participates in all four meetings and present their projects on time.
