Staying in Touch
Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,
For those of you who have been through the MCPS fingerprinting and badging process, JCA Heyman Interages is working for you. JCA Heyman Interages is partnering with the MCPS fingerprinting and badging office to mail you a renewed badge when your current badge expires. We hope this makes volunteering easier and saves you another trip to the badging office.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT
Thank you to JCA Heyman Interages volunteer Allen Perper. Allen has lived in the greater DC area nearly all his life. As a young man, he was greatly influenced by the civil rights movement of the 60’s and 70's. This helped shape his insights about politics, justice, and social action. In the 70’s he spent six years as a jazz musician and truck driver before realizing that a college education could be of great use. Fun fact: Allen attended Woodstock. He worked for more than 30 years as a technology and process consultant for large private and public sector organizations. Allen and his wife have two sons: one is a musician and is also in culinary school; the other is an employee in the Maryland Comptroller’s office and has two children of his own.
Allen is (mostly) retired and is intent upon nurturing his heart and his community. Currently, he is volunteering in the virtual JCA Heyman Interages Highland Summer Book Club and throughout the past year, he volunteered with the virtual Highland Readers Theater Club, where elementary school children take turns reading lines. For a number of years, he also volunteered with JCA Heyman Interages program Everybody Counts, helping 4-5th graders with math, and he has participated in book clubs with 8th-grade students. We appreciate all of Allen's dedicated efforts and enthusiasm for intergenerational programs.

This summer JCA Heyman Interages is partnering with Whetstone Elementary School. Pick the day and time you would like to read with 2nd and 3rd graders in this summer school program. We just ask for consistency in your schedule at the school. Summer school is in session from 8:45 am to 1:30 pm, excluding lunch time. Masks are optional. Summer school runs from July 5 to August 6. The teacher will assist in choosing books, or choose them yourself. This program is in-person.

Read Bedtime Stories via Zoom This Summer
at 7:00 pm
There may not be any more important habit to establish than that of reading aloud to a child. The cognitive and academic benefits are well-documented by researchers. The virtual bedtime story initiative at Wheaton Woods Elementary School is one more tool to help foster a love of reading among children and to improve their vocabulary.
During this five-week long program, each Tuesday weeknight a team of three JCA Interages volunteers will take turns reading bedtime story books via Zoom to Wheaton Woods Elementary School students and their parents, who will listen in the comfort of their homes. Students, parents, teachers, and volunteers will all participate in the Zoom sessions, which will be 30 minutes long
A current MCPS Badge is required for this program. If you are interested, please contact Indira Dingledine at idingledine@accessjca.org.

The JCA's Heyman Interages Center has invited students to participate in a joint intergenerational program with the JCA's Kensington Club and Arts for the Aging.
Young people have joined Arts for the Aging as art teachers for a four-week workshop series, during which students and older adults come together to explore ideas of personal expression and identity through creative movement, poetry, and visual art. Participants develop intergenerational connections by creating group poetry. The words generated are used to inspire creative movement and are incorporated into individual and group artwork. Students are earning 5 SSL hours while creating art and learning more about themselves and others. The Kensington Club is an engaging adult day-care program for elderly adults with dementia
