Staying in Touch
Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,
February is Black History Month and there are so many sources of information, inspiration, and education.
Of the many topical films, here is one that may be of interest:
Devotion - a 2022 American biographical war film based on the 2015 book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, which retells the inspirational true story of Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator in U.S. Navy history, and the comradeship between him and naval officer Tom Hudner during the Korean War.
Here is a wonderful video segment from CBS Sunday Morning about the real-life people who are featured in the Devotion movie.

"I gained more understanding and respect for the older generation."
"Before this program, I was under the impression that most, if not all, elders were more close-minded and judgmental of our generation. But after talking with some of them, I learned about their lives and how we tend to share similar mindsets and interests. Now, I don't see older adults as people who are close-minded or mean, but rather people who have experienced a lot in their life and have much knowledge to share."

Tu B'Shevat, pre-kindergarteners from Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School returned to the Kensington Club
To celebrate the 'birthday' of the trees, Tu B'Shevat, pre-kindergarteners from Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School returned to the Kensington Club for fun activities and friendship. Students and Kensington Club members had so much fun participating in a Tu B'Shevat seder, including tasting fruits, nuts, white and grape juice, helping each other plant parsley for Passover, dancing together, listening to a story, and grinding wheat!
The students toured the Kensington Club's extensive art show in the JCA building and saw the beautiful artwork they created with members during their Chanukah celebration last December. We look forward to continue to build these special relationships in the future. The Kensington Club of JCA offers day programs for adults with early-stage memory loss.

Black Resistance
by Andy,
a sophomore in high school
Black History Month is the ideal time to learn about and become inspired by the life, history, and culture of Black Americans. Many of us are sorely unaware of the depth, scope, and importance of Black history. Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme for Black History Month. A theme is not intended to limit people’s attention to certain aspects of the Black experience but to help focus people’s attention on important issues that deserve’ emphasis. In 2021, the Black History Month theme was ‘The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. In 2022, the theme was ‘Black Health and Wellness.’ This year, Black History Month celebrates ‘Black Resistance.’
It seems like a long time ago when Black Americans were legally excluded from so many aspects of American life. Looking at black and white photographs from the Civil Rights movement, I reflect on how my grandparents watched these events evolve. Our country would be so different without leaders who fought against civil rights, such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman; Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. These people have helped us learn what courage, determination, and what persistence is. They eliminated obstacles, they stood against injustice, and they helped us pull together as a country and work toward overcoming injustice. Black History Month recognizes all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa to Black people living in the U.S. today.
Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the Netherlands are the only other countries outside the U.S. that officially recognize Black History Month. While the United States and Canada celebrate Black History Month in February, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the Neverlands celebrate it in October.
There are many online resources to learn about Black History. My favorite is the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) Searchable Museum, which can be found at the following site: https://www.searchablemuseum.com/. The Searchable Museum, which was first introduced in 2021, is constantly updating its content and exhibits. The site allows people from all over the world to view interesting exhibits and stories from the comfort of their own homes!

Seeking Volunteers
for the Annual Food Drive Committee
Join us to battle hunger! JCA Interages is seeking volunteers for a committee to help plan our annual Good Deeds Day Food Drive. Each year, JCA Heyman Interages participates in The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington's locally-led "Good Deeds Week", an international initiative. The food drive will be held on April 1 and needs community members dropping off food, as well as younger volunteers helping bring in the donations. This will meet the JCA Interages mission of providing meaningful intergenerational programming. The students will earn Service Learning Hours.
According to Harvest Share, limited access to food is not what first comes to mind when we think about Montgomery County but, in our population of over 1 million, 115,000 people are considered "food insecure." The number of residents affected has increased 37% since the pandemic began, with 41,000 children impacted. (Gundersen, C., M. Hake, A. Dewey, E. Engelhard (2020). The Impact of the Coronavirus on Food Insecurity in 2020, Update October 2020 [Data file and FAQ]. Available from Feeding America: research@feedingamerica.org).

Make a gift to support the good work that we do.
You can designate your gift to intergenerational programs on the donation form.
