Staying in Touch
Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,
The Interages staff is making arrangements with MCPS to renew and mail your MCPS Badge, needed for volunteering virtually and in-person. For badges expiring in October, Interages staff will submit a request to MCPS in September/first week of October. If all of your requirements are met, MCPS will mail the MCPS badge to JCA Interages, we will then mail the MCPS badge to you. A badge with a 10/22 expiration date means it will expire on 10/31/2022.
Please note that a valid Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse Webinar viewing is required for MCPS to release a renewed badge. Your webinar completion is valid for three academic years from the time you watched the webinar. Your webinar viewing is valid for three academic (not calendar) years from the time you last watched the webinar. If you need to watch the webinar again, CLICK HERE.

JCA Interages will manage a new
AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents Program!
|
Foster Grandparents is a national program established in 1965 for the purpose of pairing senior citizens with at-risk children. Even though this AmeriCorps program has been around for some time, it is new to Montgomery County. It will be managed by JCA Heyman Interages.
Foster Grandparents will volunteer in the classroom with K-3 students at Montgomery County elementary schools, providing one-on-one support to at-risk children. The focused attention they provide has been shown to improve students' social, emotional, and academic development while promoting school readiness. Foster Grandparents themselves benefit from volunteer engagement and find these one-on-one connections to be particularly rewarding.
There are incentive benefits for the volunteers as well:
- Tax-free stipend - $3.15/hr
- Accident and liability insurance while volunteering
- Ride On Bus Service (free for seniors in Montgomery County)
- A meal each day spent volunteering
-
Vacation, sick days, paid inclement weather days
Volunteer Eligibility
Volunteers must:
- Be a Montgomery County Maryland Resident
- Be either a U.S. citizen or green card holder
- Be 55 years of age or older
- Be at or below a prescribed income level ($51,520 per single adult)
- Pass a sex-offender and criminal background check
- Complete a pre-service physical w/TB test
- Be able to work at least 20 hours a week at their volunteer site
- Complete a compensated, 40-hour pre-service training

New Staff Highlight
JCA Heyman Interages has a new staff member! We welcome, happily, Aliesha Morris. She has a message for you all.
Hi all,
My name is Aliesha Morris and I'm the new Program Manager for the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program which is a part of the Heyman Interages Program. I wanted to take a moment to say an official hello to everyone!
I'm excited to work alongside our amazing administrative team to uphold our mission of helping Montgomery County's older adults and their families build bridges across generations. I'm excited to speak and work closely with most of you over the coming months. I have a number of years working in gerontology and mental health which involved service coordination and supervision of staff which uniquely connected me to this position. Outside of my professional experience, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my friends, and finding new plants for my garden.
Should you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to me directly at amorris@AccessJCA.org.
Looking forward to working with you all.
Thank you,
Aliesha Morris

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL
Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth? Build a relationship with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff. Even as more and more activities open up and students return to in-person classes in the fall, it is rewarding to make these "old-fashioned" connections with a young person and share perspectives as we move into post-pandemic life.
You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. We need more older adults to match with the many interested students. For more info or to sign up, please email sharefromadistance@accessjca.org. Thanks for your help and support!

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH THE JCA SUKKAH
|
Here is a chance to do a mitzvah! A mitzvah is a good deed. The Jewish holiday Sukkot (“Huts” or “Booths”), is an autumn harvest festival in which an outdoor hut is built and decorated with natural items such as branches, leaves, gourds, and more.
JCA is seeking volunteers to help put up the JCA's first Sukkah! We would like to have it put together on October 6th or 7th and to have help taking it down on October 20th or 21st. The JCA has an easy Sukkah kit. If you are interested, please contact Indira Dingledine at idingledine@accessjca.org.
