Staying in Touch
Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,
MCPS UPDATE...MCPS UPDATE...MCPS UPDATE...
MCPS has changed its policy for JCA Heyman Interages volunteers. MCPS yellow badges will no longer be issued or used. Volunteers registered in a JCA Interages program should now bring a state-issued ID, such as a driver's license, and check in at the front desk of the school. If you are volunteering in a virtual JCA Interages program, please have your state-issued ID ready to show if asked. JCA Interages volunteer fingerprinting records are shared with the school. Also, MCPS is requiring that the MCPS badges be returned to MCPS. Please either mail your badge(s) to the Office of Human Resources and Development 45 W. Gude Drive Suite LLC14 Rockville, Maryland 20850, or to Indira Dingledine, Volunteer Manager, JCA Heyman Interages 12320 Parklawn Drive Rockville, MD 20852. We recommend that you take a picture of your badge for your records before returning the badge. We will keep you updated on MCPS developments.

Volunteer Highlight
Lisa Farhi was born in New York, though she spent most of her childhood in California (CA). She attended the University of California (UC)-Davis for human development and UC-Los Angeles (UCLA) for graduate school in teaching. Her first teaching jobs were in LA and San Francisco. She did that for about 7 years before her husband got a job as a reporter for the Washington Post, where he still works; they moved to the area with their toddler son, who is now 37 years old. Today, they also have a daughter (29) and two grandchildren.
Throughout her 40-year career in education, Lisa worked with pre-kindergarten and elementary-age children. With MCPS, she served as a classroom teacher, a consulting teacher, a staff development coordinator, a county instructional assistant and an assistant principal. Former students remember her from Fallsmead, Ritchie Park, Seven Locks and Twinbrook Elementary Schools. Now retired, she is glad to remain in the area, noting “It’s so beautiful to hear about my former students from their parents.”
Today, she’s involved in two book clubs and a movie club. Her half-Armenian, half-Greek heritage brings a Middle Eastern bent to what she cares about and reads about, mainly showing up in her cooking. Through the Jewish Council for the Aging, Lisa volunteers with the Head Start program taught by Mrs. Anne-Marie Simcox at Maryvale ES, an experience she describes as “wonderful” from the day she started.

Seeking Volunteers
for a Unique Opportunity
MCPS is proud to announce the return of a unique, in-person learning experience for 7th graders this year: Junior Achievement Finance Park at Edison High School of Technology. Each year, 7th-grade students around MCPS learn about financial literacy through a series of lessons to help better prepare them for adulthood. Their learning concludes with a simulation to experience what it’s like to be an adult in the real world! This wonderful experience has been virtual for the last couple of years, but we’re excited to be able to go back in person to the actual center this year. Gaithersburg Middle School (GMS) students are scheduled for this experience on January 4th, 5th, and 6th, and we can’t do this without your help!
When: January 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2023, 8:30am-1:45pm
Who: Any person 18 years of age or older that has ever paid a bill (any type of bill)
Where: Edison High School of Technology (12501 Dalewood Dr, Silver Spring, MD 20906)

Seeking Volunteers
for the Annual Food Drive Committee
Join us to battle hunger. JCA Interages is seeking volunteers for a committee to help plan our annual Good Deeds Day Food Drive. Each year, JCA Heyman Interages participates in The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington's locally-led "Good Deeds Week", an international initiative. The food drive will be held on a day in March and needs community members dropping off food, as well as younger volunteers helping bring in the donations. This will meet the JCA Interages mission of providing meaningful intergenerational programming. The students will earn Service Learning Hours.
According to Harvest Share, limited access to food is not what first comes to mind when we think about Montgomery County but, in our population of over 1 million, 115,000 people are considered food insecure. The number of residents affected has increased 37% since the pandemic began with 41,000 children impacted. (Gundersen, C., M. Hake, A. Dewey, E. Engelhard (2020). The Impact of the Coronavirus on Food Insecurity in 2020, Update October 2020 [Data file and FAQ]. Available from Feeding America: research@feedingamerica.org).
