JCA Interages' Educator Panelists Meet With Aspiring Students This Spring
John F. Kennedy High School students enrolled in the Teacher Academy of Maryland will have the chance to speak with a panel of JCA Interages volunteers who are all former or current educators.
The Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM) is a program of study that seeks to address the persistent teacher shortage by creating a pipeline of teacher candidates from grades 6-12.
The TAM program prepares students for further education and teaching careers in the education profession. Upon completion of the program and passing the ParaPro test or PRAXIS Core, high school graduates are ready for employment in the teaching profession. This program is based on the outcomes of the Maryland Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree. Students can receive college credit and scholarships to several Maryland baccalaureate teacher education programs.
Here are some of the questions students are asking the JCA Interages panelists.
- What were some of the positions you had in education? How did you prepare for them?
- Why did you select that job?
- What was your favorite part of your teaching career?
- What was the most challenging part of your teaching career?
- What are two life lessons you learned from your experience in education?
- What was a rewarding experience in your teaching career? Life?
- What is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Seeking Volunteers for One-on-One Tutoring
"School" during the pandemic barely resembles the school we have all known and experienced for years; academic challenges are many. Many students face obstacles to learning with changes in where classes are held and how they are presented, as well as how homework is assigned and academic support is provided. Because of this, the need for one-on-one tutoring has never been greater, and there are many one-on-one tutoring opportunities available through Interages. If you are interested in one-on-one tutoring (either virtually or in-person), please contact idingledine@accessjca.org

Volunteer Highlight
Bill Waller has been a dedicated Interages volunteer for 19 years.
I’m Bill Waller and I have been a part of my greater Montgomery Community since moving here with my wife in 1975. We raised three wonderful, accomplished women. I have been involved with JCA Interages and the Dialogues Program for longer than I can remember, starting at Kennedy HS and expanding to whichever school needed. I now volunteer with Interages and newer, similar programs, Empowering The Ages, and Sharing Smiles, a penpal group.
My career was with the US Customs Service, now CBP. While there, I spent several years mainstreaming developmentally challenged employees into federal service, with the LEAP program, Life Experience Abilities Program.
I’ve been taking photos for over 50 years, but have rarely shared with other than family and friends. I am a member of several local photography clubs including Photoworks at Glen Echo and most recently the FONZ Photo Club. I have exhibited in several local venues – libraries, senior centers and Kentlands.
My life’s journey has taken me to all the continents and north of Latitude 80: I have provided images for the Washington Post for a travel article on Antarctica. I’ve lived in England, Kenya and unfortunately Viet Nam. The Silk Road always intrigued me so over several years, I traversed sections of the "Silk Road” from Venice across the Caucasus and Central Asia to the Tian Shan mountains in Western China. Before Covid, travels included Viet Nam and Cambodia. I returned to Asia to explore more of China and Mongolia by rail. From Ulan Bator, I crossed into Russia to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway into Moscow. A recent journey was last November when friends and I completed a delayed journey to Churchill, Manitoba, to see the polar bears waiting for the sea ice to form on Hudson’s Bay.
My personal philosophy has been to let my experiences influence and change what I believe – only by change does growth occur. I hope to continue travelling and documenting our world on this exciting shared journey for as long as I am able. Working with my fellow seniors and our students is one way I can pass along the wonders of our magical Blue Ball…

Interages Volunteers Go the Extra Mile
Our Wheaton Wood Elementary Reading Program volunteers recently read the e-book "Pete the Cat and the Super-Cool Science Fair" by Kimberly and James Dean. Then, televising through Zoom, they added a wonderful visual science project. The volunteers demonstrated the vinegar volcano described in the book that Pete and his friends made for the science fair. The volunteers’ volcano produced the same foamy pink lava as in the book, and everyone cheered. The volunteers may repeat the demonstration volcano for children who have not see it.
