Pre-K Students and Kensington Club Members Enjoy a Special Gathering in the JCA Sukkah
A fun time was shared by all in the JCA's first Sukkah. JCA Kensington Club Members and 17 pre-k students from the Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School gathered in the Sukkah for conversation, book reading of Benji's Blanket from the PJ library, pizza eating, Sukkot Bingo playing, laughter, and singing. Participants of all backgrounds and religions enjoyed the special day. PJ Library sends free, award-winning books that celebrate Jewish values and culture to families with children from birth through 12 years old. The Kensington Club offers day programming for adults with early-stage memory loss. A sukkah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and natural items.

Volunteer Highlight
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Karen Goldberg came to the DC Metropolitan area in 1978 to continue pursuing her career as a clinical social worker. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1976 from the University of Michigan. After marrying and working for two years in Pittsburgh, she and her husband decided to explore broader opportunities by moving to Alexandria, VA, followed later by relocating to DC, and finally coming to MD in 1986. Karen worked in a variety of settings, including an alternative school program, Child Protective Services, Children’s Hospital, and the Jewish Social Service Agency. In 1986, she began establishing a private practice of clinical social work. In 1991, she also helped found and then become the clinical director of a non-profit organization providing mental health services to students in the Metropolitan public and private school systems.
Since retiring from direct clinical practice at the end of 2018, Karen has focused on providing clinical supervision and mentoring to newer social workers, providing consultation for two mental health-related projects, and on a life-long interest in helping children find joy in reading and language arts. Having volunteered in Montgomery County schools while raising her two now adult daughters, she returned to the MCPS elementary school classroom as a volunteer for second-grade students. The start of the pandemic led her to discover JCA’s Interages Program. Since then, she has tutored individual students, including a 12-year-old Afghan refugee living in Greece, as well as participated in the Highland Virtual Readers’ Theater program, the Grandreaders’ program, and the book clubs affiliated with MCPS and the Montgomery County Libraries. When not volunteering, Karen can be found spending time with her husband, two daughters, and a newly born granddaughter or pursuing her own reading, further learning opportunities, taking long walks, knitting, and practicing yoga or piano. She is grateful for the rich experiences she has had during her lifetime, and is looking forward to what lies ahead in the future.
