THE INTERAGES CONNECTOR

STAYING CONNECTED

Staying in Touch

Hello JCA Interages Volunteers

JCA Interages was honored to have a visit to one of our programs, Bel Pre Grandreaders, by Elba Garcia of the Montgomery County Public School Superintendent's Office, and David Engel, Chair of the Commission on Aging and JCA Interages Advisory Committee member.

Words from Ms. Garcia reflecting on her visit:

Elba M. Garcia M.Ed

Senior Community Advisor

Thank you so much for your hospitality at Bel Pre ES this morning. The excitement about reading and the effective partnership with JCA Interages that you have fostered was palpable during the visit. I strongly believe that Intergenerational volunteers play a crucial role in schools and bring immense value to schools by enriching the learning environment, fostering positive relationships, and promoting a sense of belonging and inclusivity for all members of the school community.”

IMPORTANT MCPS REQUIREMENT FOR VOLUNTEERING

Dear Volunteers,

MCPS requires that all volunteers watch an online webinar on Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse every three academic years. So, if you watched the webinar in 2021 or earlier, you will need to now watch the updated webinar again. Please be sure to choose the 23-24 version of the webinar.

Watch the Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse Webinar through the link below. (After clicking through the webinar, a gradesheet will show 100% for successful completion) It takes about 50 minutes to watch.

Reader’s theater is a style of theater in which the readers gather in small groups to convey stories using vocal expression to help the audience understand it. Reader’s theater increases reading comprehension and reading motivation and helps develop fluency through repeated exposure to text.

Interages Volunteer Highlight

Thank you to Anita Campbell for volunteering and sharing about herself.

After graduating from the University of Dayton, I worked and enjoyed food service supervision including nursing homes, a hotel, and a hospital, first in New York State and then here in Maryland. I transitioned to banking and worked for M&T Bank for many years at the Gaithersburg branch. My organizational skills, customer service skills, and keen eye for detail served me well as the branch's operations coordinator and was a great fit for me.

I enjoy reading, board games, watching all kinds of sports on TV with my husband, and parks and nature centers. I also enjoy volunteering because I really believe that "It is in giving that we receive". There is so much going on in the world that volunteering helps me stay grounded.

My initial volunteering opportunity with JCA Heyman Interages Center was with a Reading Theatre group. My husband and I have no children so just being in a school environment was a new experience for me. Currently, I am involved with a Grandreaders' program at an elementary school in Germantown. The half-hour flies by as a few of the second graders read aloud to us. It makes me smile to see children away from electronics and actively engaged with a book in the school's media center.
