Staying in Touch
Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,
July's blooming flowers are particularly beautiful. According to Bloom Nation, Orchids, Delphinium, Lilies, Dahlias, and Hydrangeas are just some of the flowers of July. This month, we hope you have a chance to encounter them.

Fall program planning is underway
We look forward to offering a variety of fall volunteer opportunities.
Virtual and In-Person opportunities will be available.
We are currently negotiating the details of our elementary, and middle school in-classroom support with MCPS schools. In addition, we are pleased to renew classroom pre-k support slots. Our ESOL classroom support planning is underway. Volunteers will have the opportunity to mentor high school students. One-on-one tutoring will reach children in subjects of reading, writing, math, and the sciences. We will have delightful reading programs for elementary children. Furthermore, through SHARE from a Distance, pen pals will continue to dispel myths about aging and create meaningful connections.

Summer MCPL Grandreader Success!
The Summer Grandreaders Program, a partnership between JCA Interages and Montgomery County Public Libraries, is winding down after a successful start. Registered volunteers are reading to elementary school children at four libraries in Montgomery County. The children can drop in the sessions. We will hold this program again in the future.

The Summer MCPL Grandreader program had four sites including Gaithersburg, White Oak, Aspen Hill, and Wheaton Libraries.

Introducing a new staff member of JCA Heyman Interages
We are so pleased to introduce to you Grace Kim, the newest JCA Interages staff member. Grace introduces herself in this segment.
My name is Grace Kim, and I’m a Montgomery County native. I graduated from Richard Montgomery High School and the University of Maryland, College Park. I’m passionate about community development and capacity-building among vulnerable populations, which led me to volunteer with the Peace Corps after completing my undergraduate studies. I learned of the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA) and its Interages program when serving as an AmeriCorps member for the Children’s Opportunity Fund of the Greater Washington Community Foundation this past year. Overall, I look forward to meeting those within the JCA community and learning more about the inner workings of the nonprofit sector.

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL
Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth? Build a relationship with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff. Even as more and more activities open up and students return to in-person classes in the fall, it is rewarding to make these "old-fashioned" connections with a young person and share perspectives as we move into post-pandemic life.
You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. We need more older adults to match with the many interested students. For more info or to sign up, please email sharefromadistance@accessjca.org. Thanks for your help and support!

JCA Interages volunteer, Emily Harris, to provide Math tutor training to volunteers
While Emily is not a teacher, she is a retired genetics researcher and graduate school professor who loves math. She was excited about math tutoring opportunities with Interages during the pandemic and signed up to assist in virtual classrooms as well as tutor individual students online. She quickly learned that students are learning math in different ways than she did, so she began “studying” the Eureka method of teaching math to elementary school through online resources. She has tutored Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 5th grade students.
Emily will be offering tutor training in Math 101 for anyone who may be interested in the new math that MCPS is using for students. In addition, she will offer training in understanding how to use and access resources, including Eureka
Monday, August 15, and Thursday, August 18 from 12 -1 pm
Register for Monday's Training
Eureka! Introduction to tools used to teach math using the Eureka method in Montgomery County elementary schools...number bonds, place value charts, tape diagrams, and more.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
Register for Thursday's Training
Help! Introduction to resources about the Eureka method for parents and teachers to use to teach elementary school math.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Seeking volunteers to present naturalist topics
The JCA Kensington Clubs offer engagement programs for adults with early-stage memory loss. They are seeking volunteers to provide nature-focused presentations to the Kensington Club community. The topics could be about native flowers, our watersheds, our coastline, or any nature-based topic you would like to present. If you are interested, please contact Colleen Kemp at ckemp@accessjca.org.

Covid is still with us
Keeping up with the alphabet soup of variants of the Omicron strain can be confusing. Here is some information and reminders about where we stand and what to do.
In addition to your own health and vaccination status, always consider that of the people close to you when deciding what actions you will take to prevent infection.
