As our volunteers know, we always need more help at our El Mercadito location (3533 W North Ave.), but recently that need has skyrocketed as we experience unprecedented client numbers. Recently, we served 210 households in one day — a record for that location.
Check out the wonderful video overview above of the location! This video was made by our very own Diego Colón to inspire you to sign up for a shift at this lively distribution site and make sure that the community gets fed.
Additionally, El Mercadito is equipped to host volunteer groups of up to 15 people. To set up a group volunteer opportunity at El Mercadito, please email alyssa.lavroff@nourishinghopechi.org.
Can’t make it to El Mercadito? Our Online Market program needs help too!

THE OBAMA FOUNDATION,
THE HONEYCOMB PROJECT, AND NOURISHING HOPE
|
Nourishing Hope was invited to participate in a day of service organized by the Obama Foundation and the Honeycomb Project on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event took place at the South Side YMCA and featured service projects for 4 local nonprofits: Connections for Abused Women and their Children, the Love Fridge, Growing Home, and of course, Nourishing Hope! More than 350 community members and Obama Foundation employees attended the event and made 237 cards for Nourishing Hope’s Home Delivery clients. Nourishing Hope made an appearance in the Sun Times, WGN, and perhaps most exciting, on former president Barack Obama’s Instagram!

CHANGING OF THE GUARD – HOME DELIVERY NORTH
|
Eva Trampka, who served as manager of home delivery for the past four years, will be embarking on a new professional journey starting January 23rd! In her new role, Eva will serve as Howard Brown’s associate director of aging. Through the pandemic, Eva nearly doubled the number of clients receiving home deliveries and expanded deliveries to Wednesdays in addition to Saturdays. We’re so grateful for Eva's dedication and compassion for our neighbors we wish her the very best at Howard Brown.
|
And now, Ana Petersohn is our new manager of home delivery! Previously, Ana worked closely with Eva as home delivery program coordinator. Prior to joining Nourishing Hope, Ana worked at Beyond Hunger, managing their home delivery program. Originally from Mexico City, Ana has a master’s degree in nutrition. Congrats, Ana!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – PAUL C.

This month we are highlighting Home Delivery volunteer, Paul C. Paul began volunteering in April 2020 after looking for a way to aid Chicagoans struggling with food insecurity as a result of the pandemic. ON THE PASSING OF GEORGIE JACOBS
|
At Nourishing Hope, we mourn the passing of Georgie Jacobs, a regular volunteer since 2018 who contributed more than 670 hours of her time in support of our mission.
Georgie cared deeply for helping our neighbors in need. Before the pandemic, she often spent hours restocking the front produce cooler. During the pandemic, she enjoyed organizing and displaying the flowers, and preparing our produce bags. She had many close friends on the Thursday restock crew.
We will miss Georgie dearly. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
