January 2026

Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

At the end of 2025, our Board approved a new five-year strategic plan that reflects both how our economy is evolving and how Virginia’s Gateway Region itself has grown with the expansion of our region. This is an essential exercise to ensure our region stays aligned with market realities and positioned for opportunity.

The Board reaffirmed the three core strategies that have long guided our work and continue to anchor our mission: Business Growth, Powerful Partnerships and Innovative Resources.

What’s new is a sharpened focus on six key business areas that best align with the Gateway Region’s assets, resources and capabilities – and where we see the greatest potential over the next five years:

  • Advanced Manufacturing – building on regional strengths in specialty foods, pharmaceuticals and technology-driven production.
  • Logistics & Distribution – leveraging our strategic location along the I-85 and I-95 corridors.
  • Future Technology – positioning the region as a hub for digital infrastructure that delivers long-term value.
  • Energy & the Energy Supply Chain – supporting projects and suppliers that power growth across industries.
  • Wood Products – advancing innovation and sustainability while honoring our strong timber heritage.
  • Cold Storage – strengthening critical infrastructure that supports food systems, resilience and supply-chain stability.

To start, this strategic plan is a roadmap that carries us forward into 2026, but it is also a commitment to stewardship, authenticity, respect and vision-casting. It will guide our work as we unite the region for economic prosperity and ensure the Gateway Region remains a place where companies choose to locate, hire, expand and thrive.

VGR Celebrates Important Milestones of 2025

As Virginia continues to gain national recognition for its business climate and workforce leadership, the Gateway Region delivered results in 2025 — from major logistics investments like the LEGO Group’s regional distribution center to Dominion Energy's innovation in energy with its new High Voltage Lab and advanced manufacturing. This year also marked a milestone as Emporia, Greensville County and Brunswick County joined our regional partnership, expanding our assets and strengthening collaboration.

Walmart Expands Dinwiddie County Distribution Center

Virginia’s Gateway Region was proud to join Walmart in celebrating a multi-million-dollar automation expansion at its Sutherland distribution center in Dinwiddie County. The investment will make the facility fully automated while creating pathways for associates to upskill and advance, with no jobs lost – a model of how innovation and workforce development move forward together. Walmart also recognized the people who make this facility exceptional: naming conference rooms in honor of its longest-tenured employees and awarding a Habitat for Humanity home to another team member.

Taking Stewie – and Stew – on the Road to Richmond

With our new economic development partners in Brunswick County, we shared a little holiday magic with the gift of Brunswick Stew, along with a visit from Stewie, with our colleagues at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Season’s Greetings and Thankfulness for Collaboration

We’re thankful for the investors, localities and economic development partners who joined us last month for VGR’s annual holiday party. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved through collaboration, strengthen relationships and look ahead to the opportunities the coming year will bring.

Supporting Homeowners and Enriching Communities

We were proud to join AdvanSix and Rebuilding Together Richmond last month to support a Hopewell homeowner with essential repairs that improve safety and accessibility. Community partnership is at the heart of regional growth.

CCALS Opens Critical Infrastructure Center

VGR celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the Energy-Centric UAS Center for Critical Infrastructure, led by the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems (CCALS) and funded by the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission. With a distributed network that includes Richard Bland College and the County of Dinwiddie Airport, this new center positions our region at the forefront of advanced aviation, energy-resilient unmanned systems and workforce development. This initiative will support industry, strengthen critical infrastructure and create new opportunities in our region and beyond.
