The Power of a Safe Place

"It's amazing how much easier everything is when your basic needs are taken care of. I would spend my day just worrying about where I will sleep tonight, where I can get food tonight. I couldn't focus on getting a job because I was always worried and obsessed about it. Since being here one week, I have had two interviews."

This is the real impact of CRITI. When women and children have a safe place to eat, sleep, and feel supported, they can focus on building a future. Just one week in our program gave this resident the space to breathe, plan, and take concrete steps toward independence.

Celebrating the Heart of CRITI: Honoring Our Volunteers

On December 11th, we gathered to celebrate the heart of CRITI: our volunteers. It was a night filled with gratitude, laughter, and connection as we shared dinner, honored service, and reflected on the incredible impact our volunteers make every day.

We were proud to present the Legacy Scholarship Award to Beth Reed, former board chair, in recognition of her lasting leadership and dedication to our mission.

We also honored long-time volunteers with beautiful crystal Christmas ornaments:

  • Chris, 6 years of service
  • Donnie, 11 years of service
  • Debie, 23 years of service

These volunteers, along with so many others, give in countless ways. From donating brand new coats for every resident each year, to serving faithfully in the thrift store, sponsoring families during the holidays, and acting as CRITI ambassadors, their generosity reaches every corner of our organization.

We also recognized Jordan and Samantha for their outstanding work as Child Advocate volunteers, Steve and Meredith for helping set up the thrift store and continuing to volunteer weekly, and Julia for her dedication in the thrift store and for managing our Chattanooga Room in the Inn Thrift Store Poshmark page.

To every volunteer who gives their time, skills, resources, and heart to CRITI, thank you. Our work would not be possible without you, and we are deeply grateful for each of you.

A Christmas Home: Stability, Safety, and New Beginnings

Sometimes life surprises you in the best way. A resident who had been waiting for housing for over two years received the news she had been hoping for just a little over a month after joining our program, her name finally came up.

During her stay, she worked hard to maintain employment and even accepted a better-paying position, showing incredible resilience and determination. When the timing of the move came suddenly, she faced a challenge. Without support, she would not have been able to cover the deposit or prorated rent. Thanks to CRITI, she now has the resources she needs to step into a new home just in time to spend Christmas there with her three children.

This is more than a home. It is stability, safety, and the chance to create lasting holiday memories as a family. After months of uncertainty, she and her children can celebrate Christmas surrounded by comfort and security, something every child deserves during the holidays.

During her time with us, she eagerly participated in Life Skills classes, discovering tools and knowledge to help her thrive. She is already planning to continue with aftercare services because she knows her journey is just beginning.

Stories like hers remind us why our work matters. With support, encouragement, and resources, lives are changed and futures are rebuilt.

Delivering More Than Gifts:

The Heart of Aftercare

Our Aftercare Coach, Mayra, had the joy of delivering Christmas presents to some of our CRITI graduates. Each gift came from a family sponsor who had been paired with a graduate family and received their wish list. What arrived at the door was more than wrapped presents. It was a reminder that someone remembered them, listened to them, and cared deeply about their family.

For our graduates, aftercare means they are not walking their next chapter alone. Moments like this bring reassurance, dignity, and the comfort of knowing support continues beyond their time in shelter.

We are so grateful to the family sponsors who made this possible and to Mayra for being a steady, compassionate presence in the lives of the families she serves. These are the connections that make stability feel real.

Leading with Heart:

Finley’s Big Impact

Finley is just six years old, and he raised $738 to support women and children at Chattanooga Room in the Inn. He decorated his own donation box, asked others to join in, and kept going because he cared about helping people who need a safe place to stay.

Because of Finley’s kindness and determination, families in our program will have warmth, stability, and support when they need it most. What might feel like spare change to some becomes food, shelter, and hope for others.

It is truly amazing to see someone so young choosing compassion and generosity. Finley reminds us that you are never too small to make a big difference. Thank you, Finley, for leading with your heart and showing our community what giving looks like.

Tax-Smart Giving for the New Year

Tax-smart giving allows you to support CRITI while potentially reducing your tax burden.

Options include:

  • Donating appreciated stocks or assets
  • Using a donor-advised fund
  • Deferred gifts of cash or other assets
  • Bequests (allocating a portion of your estate in your will)
  • Retirement plan and life insurance beneficiary designations: (IRAs), 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and pensions
  • Gifts that pay an income to donors
  • Charitable remainder annuities (cash or appreciated securities)
  • Gifts that protect donors’ assets
  • Charitable lead trusts
  • Retained life estates

Other non-cash gifts also apply such as appreciated assets and grants from donor-advised funds. Every gift helps women and children experiencing homelessness find safety, stability, and hope, and tax-smart strategies can make your generosity even more impactful.

The Power of Safety:

Hope, Confidence, and a Future

“I look forward to being here every day. I’m so thankful I’m not living in 20 degree weather anymore and that I have food to eat and a warm bed.”

Not long ago, her days were about survival. Cold nights. Constant worry. Choosing between staying warm and staying safe. There was no energy left to think about the future when the "right now" felt so heavy. For the first time in a long while, she can breathe.

With that kind of stability, something quietly powerful has blossomed. She shared that she never used to think much about her appearance because it did not feel important when she was just trying to get through the day. Now, she is investing in herself, wanting to look polished for job interviews, feel confident when she walks into a room, and imagine a future where she is more than her circumstances.

That is what safety makes possible. When basic needs are met, dignity returns, confidence grows, and hope finds its way back.

Volunteering That Lasts a Lifetime

At CRITI, volunteers often arrive through simple acts of generosity and stay because of meaningful connection. Few stories capture that better than Debie Michaels’, whose relationship with CRITI spans more than two decades. From donating a semi truck full of items in 2001 to volunteering regularly in our current thrift store, Debie’s journey shows how one yes can grow into years of service, leadership, and impact for women and children in our programs.
