PAPER SUBMISSION REMINDER 
 
The submission portal is open! Submit your 2-page paper as soon as possible. The deadline is Friday, February 15.
 
A brochure with meeting updates and details is included in your January issue of Microscopy Today.
 
M&M 2019 will be in Portland, Oregon and it is sure to be a fantastic meeting. Mark your calendar to book your hotel room starting February 4. Online registration will be available beginning March 4.

Micrograph Awards
 
The goal of this international competition is to identify and showcase scientific micrographs and movie clips. While there must be scientific content in the images, winning entries will also exhibit exceptional composition and other esthetic qualities. The competition, open to all types of microscopy, is divided into three categories:
          Published micrograph category: Still images first published within the calendar year prior to the contest.
          Open micrograph category: Unpublished still images acquired by any microscopist.
          Video micrograph category: Movie clips up to 60 seconds in length, acquired directly with a microscope or generated as a video of a reconstruction from microscopy data. Confocal light microscopy image stacks that create 3-D images may be submitted as a still in the Open category or as an animated sequence exhibiting 3-D characteristics.
          The micrograph submission site will be open January 1 to February 21, 2019. A panel of judges will identify a number of finalists in each category and also select the first ($500), second ($300), and third ($100) prizes in each category. Members of the microscopy community will have the opportunity to vote for the "people's choice award." All micrograph awards will be presented at the annual M&M meeting.

Deep learning for electron microscopy

Finding defects in electron microscopy images takes months. Now, there's a faster way. It's called MENNDL, the Multinode Evolutionary Neural Networks for Deep Learning. It creates artificial neural networks-computational systems that loosely mimic the human brain-that tease defects out of dynamic data. It runs on all available nodes of the Summit supercomputer, performing 152 thousand million million calculations a second.  Read more here .

New method gives microscope a boost in resolution
Scientists have been able to boost current super-resolution microscopy by a novel tweak. They coated the glass cover slip as part of the sample carrier with tailor-made biocompatible nanosheets that create a 'mirror effect'. This method shows that localizing single emitters in front of a metal-dielectric coating leads to higher precision, brightness and contrast in Single Molecule Localization Microscopy (SMLM). Read more here

The MSA Student Council (StC) is organizing the 3rd annual Pre-meeting Congress for Students, Postdocs and Early-career Professionals in Microscopy & Microanalysis (PMCx60), to be held on the Saturday preceding M&M 2019 in Portland, OR.
 
The PMCx60 is a one-day conference organized by and for students and early-career professionals and offers a highly interactive forum for participants to share cutting edge research, network, and engage with peers ahead of the main meeting.
 
The StC is soliciting financial support from the MSA community and welcomes corporate sponsorship and donations from individuals/organizations to help build the future of microscopy and microanalysis.

In Memoriam 


MSA announces with regret the passing of Aldo Armigliato on November 10, 2018. Aldo was born on October 13, 1940 in Naples, Italy, the son of Nelson Armigliato and Gisella Thalmann. In 1951 his family moved to Padua where Aldo completed, in 1959, his high school degree in classical studies. He obtained his doctor's degree in Physics in 1964 at Padua University, with a particular interest in condensed matter physics. In September 1969 he married Paola and in 1970 he moved to Bologna having obtained a position at the Italian National Research Council (CNR).

He was principal scientist of the CNR Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems in Bologna until his retirement in 2007 but was still active in the lab until early 2018. During his long career, he published over 200 scientific articles, was co-editor of 4 books and actively attended and organized a large number of international conferences and workshops. His main scientific interests were electron microscopy and microanalysis of materials, components and devices for microelectronics. His latest publication (Microscopy and Microanalysis 24(3), 1-14) is dated May 2018. 

Everyone who worked with him or simply met him at one of the many workshops and conferences on microscopy and microanalysis around the world, will undoubtedly miss his scientific competence and his gentle human touch.
