January 2024

President’s note

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024!

Thanks to all the members who took the time to open and reply to the Survey put out by the Board of Directors. I feel as though it offered an insight to some of the complexities of the overall feel of the chapter leadership and what our members want. We will be using the information gathered when we

are putting events together. Additionally, we had several suggestions from the Kick-off dinner and will be implementing your ideas in our events in the upcoming season as we can.

With the start of 2024, we will all feel the crunch of the increase in greens fees over all courses here in SWFL. Please know that our league coordinator Michelle Riordan and her volunteers are out there negotiating the best rates for our members. All our league-play fees are being offered at a much lower

rate than publicly posted for non-member play. The best part of participating in the league play is you sign-up and show up! The league coordinators will negotiate with the pro shop, complete the pairings, set the game, and present the Chapter provided prizes…

If you have any questions concerning a specific league play, please contact the individual league coordinator. Hope to see you out there.

2023 Jingle Bell Open Recap!

What a great turn out for the 2023 Jingle Bell Open at

Cypress Woods Golf and Country Club.

It was great to see so many new members participate in this annual FUN event.

We had 100+ players participating this year, trying their luck putting with a Candy Cane, hitting a tee shot with a baseball bat or tennis racket, trying to hit the same club from tee to green, trying their luck hitting the tee shot with oven mitts on or making Eagles or Birdies with Santa's Helper hitting the approach shot.

In the Net Division scores were very close & a few required score card playoffs:

We paid out 8 places, these are your top 3 winners

1st        place – Paula Congiu, Vickie McGregor, Mary Ford, Carol Felner

2nd       place – Joyce Hanson, Debbi D’Amico, Betty Fedorjaka, Peggy Chandler

3rd       place – Susan Jorgensen, Angela Stone, Patti Gustason, Megan Hoornaert

In the Gross Division:

1st place – Joan Kelley, Kim Goodwin, Kyle Kelley, Bill Goodwin

2nd place – Carol Grennan, Kelly Viviani, Sheila McGonigal, Tamara Aitken

Our closest to the pin winners:

Angela Stone, Carole Boivin, Buzz Yates, Jennie Taylor

We saw some great costumes in the Spirit of the Season -

In the end "Elf" Vickie Hill and “Maria” (Barb Murtagh) and the “3 Wise (Wo)Men” Patty Gift, Jennie Taylor and Kerstin Koenig were chosen by the CW staff for the merriest outfits.

Another highlight was the Heads and Tails "competition" to win a Summer Foursome at Cypress Woods. Congratulations Kelly Viviani and a big Thank You to Jennie Taylor for facilitating.

Players, thank you very much for your participation and your support of the Pace Center of Girls.

Not only did we send the Pace Center for Girls representatives home with a car full of items from the girls wish list, gift cards and member cash donations, but we were also able to donate a total of $3000 to their Holiday Fund! Your generosity makes such a positive difference to the girls, and we greatly appreciate it.

A special thanks to ALL the volunteers that helped to make this event such a success and to Cypress Woods for hosting the 2023 LPGA Amateurs SWFL Chapter Jingle Bell Open.

World Handicap System Changes for 2024:

There are 3 key changes to the

World Handicap System in the 2024 revision:

Course Rating for Shorter Courses

(750 yds for 9 holes - 1500 yds for 18 holes)

Use of Expected Score Differentials

for when 10-17 holes are played, introducing

more flexibility to score posting.

(Must post Hole by Hole)

No more waiting on 9-hole scores to combine,

as they will count toward a player’s handicap index the very next day.

To learn more about these changes please go to usga.org

Lower Body Instability

An unstable lower body in the golf swing is usually caused by an overly active movement of the feet and ankles or too much bending/locking or collapsing of knees during the swing motion.

Examples of lower body instability are a locked right leg and/or an active left foot and knee on the backswing. Lower body and feet provide the base for good balance, power, and control.

Important SWFL Chapter Reminders!

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellation received before event registration close date: Refund, less $10 admin fee

Cancellation received after event registration close date:  Non-refundable

Chapter Event Cancellation:  Full refund/credit issued

Please note that we closely track Tropical Weather and league coordinators work closely with the courses to determine if a golf event should be cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather. The determination will be made & communicated the day prior to the event and if cancelled, you will be issued a 100% refund or a credit for the rescheduled round.

We do not typically cancel for general rain forecasts because in Florida it may or may not impact the course being played.  If you have rain / weather concerns, call the Pro Shop for course conditions but note that for a 100% refund, golf event cancellation must be made by the event coordinator.

*Request for Cancellation should be sent to the league/fun play event coordinator *
