HOMETOWN BANKER Magazine features Charlie Crawford in article on Diversity and Inclusion in the Banking Industry
Hyperion Bank Chairman and CEO Charlie Crawford was asked to provide his perspective about "Opening the Door to Opportunity for All: Diversity and Inclusion in the Banking Industry" for an article published in HOMETOWN BANKER magazine on December 16, 2020.

In her article, author Diane M. Sweeney pegged the history of diversity in the workplace to a landmark study, “Workforce 2000 – Work and Workers in the 21st century,” commissioned by former Secretary of Labor William E. Brock and published in 1987 by the Hudson Institute.

That renowned book and its sequel, "Workforce 2020" published a decade later, examined changing economic and demographic trends and how companies would need to adapt to be successful in the evolving workplace environment. Sweeney wrote: "Twenty years later, we know that diversity and inclusion are so much more than policies, programs, and headcounts. A diverse and inclusive workplace is one where everyone feels equally respected, involved, and supported — a workplace where unique needs and perspectives are discussed, welcomed, and recognized."

Sweeney cited data from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, noting that, "in the financial services industry, only 13.6% of minorities hold senior official positions in the United States. In the state of Pennsylvania, approximately 8% of minorities are part of the senior team."

“'At the heart of the matter, is equity,' shares Charlie Crawford. 'We need to recognize that not everyone starts at the same place. To understand what we need to do and implement, first we need to listen. We need to keep adapting to make sure we are not only represented by everyone but that each of those people has the same opportunities.'”

The article continues to explore the benefits of a diverse and inclusive culture, and what this means for Pennsylvania's community banks and the industry overall. READ THE FULL STORY

Conversations About Banking: Hyperion Bank Directors Jim McAlpin and Bobby Nix Discuss Diversity and More
Hyperion Bank is proud to have James J. "Jim" McAlpin, Jr. (left) and Robert "Bobby" N.C. Nix, III, Esq. as members of our Board of Directors. In this video episode of Conversations About Banking, Jim interviews Bobby about his background as a lawyer, former community bank president, and successful entrepreneur, and our Directors explore the topics of board and banking industry diversity, mentoring, leadership, and the importance of preserving the "community bank mentality." We also learn that Bobby, who played football at the University of Pennsylvania, almost became a pro football player before following in the legal footsteps of his grandfather (Pennsylvania’s first Black member of the U.S. House of Representatives) and father (who served as Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court). Read more about Bobby and Jim on our website.
Meet our new Junior Bankers!
Jameson Flowers
Harper Iannarelli
Angelo Spitz
Our Hyperion Bank employee team is like a family, and in our Philadelphia office, our family is growing with three new Junior Bankers, all delivered in the second half of 2020. We are happy to introduce you to these beautiful babies:

  • Jameson Flowers, born December 11 to Lauren Flowers, Hyperion Bank's Senior Vice President for Human Resources and Corporate Secretary, and her husband Chris. Siblings Joseph and Calista can't wait to play with their new little brother.

  • Harper Iannarelli, born August 29 to Michael Iannarelli, Banking Officer, Staff Accountant, and his wife Michelle. Harper is their first child.

  • Angelo Gilbert Spitz, born December 17 to Thomas Spitz, Assistant Vice President, Deposit Operations Specialist, and his wife Dana. We're betting that for big brother Thomas Jr., age 4, getting a baby brother just days before Christmas was the best present ever!

Please join our team in congratulating Lauren, Michael, and Tom on the newest additions to their families. We wish them all lifetimes of health and joy, and hope they'll all grow up to be #communitybankers.

Founding Director Ginny Duffy Retires from Hyperion Bank Board
Thanks for your service, guidance
After 14 years of board service – as a founding director of Hyperion Bank – Virginia M. (Ginny) Duffy, stepped down from the board, effective after its December 17 meeting.
“It has been an honor to serve,” she says. “I’m rotating off the board because I am ready for more of retirement – more of my books, my piano, my friends and my favorite causes – and because the steady progress of these last few years assures me that, with its current management, staff and board, Hyperion Bank is in excellent hands.”

Ginny retired from the practice of commercial real estate transaction law and has served on the governing boards of nonprofit organizations focused on animal rescue, affordable housing, and children.

“In addition to her wisdom and always-insightful perspective, Ginny’s longevity on the board brought a vital consistency,” says Charlie Crawford, Chairman of Hyperion’s Board. “We will miss her time, talents, and guidance, and so very much appreciate her 14 years of stalwart service. Her interest and dedication are certainly among the reasons Hyperion is in a position of strength and smart growth. Thank you, Ginny!”
More About Our Most Admired CEO, Charlie Crawford
Last month we announced that the Philadelphia Business Journal had included Hyperion Bank CEO Charlie Crawford in its annual list of local leaders earning a "2020 Most Admired CEO Award." In the Journal's Awards supplement to it's December 23rd issue, we can read more about why Charlie was selected for this award.

Charlie was described in a nomination as “an old-school gentleman without being stodgy.” Among the many accomplishments the paper cited: "Crawford oversaw a 2018 recapitalization (of Hyperion), expanded the bank to Atlanta in 2019 and this year spearheaded a joint venture, HyperionMortgage...."
Among other things, the Biz Journal asked Charlie why he is known for being “fanatical” about service. Charlie says: "In community banking, after hiring top-flight talent you can entrust with decision-making authority, it really comes down to service. So being passionate – almost singled-minded – about service really makes a difference to customers and business partners."

The Biz Journal also asked the award winners what COVID-19 had taught them about leadership. Charlie said: "It has affirmed that if you make great hires who are as invested in a common goal – in our case, unparalleled banking service – your organization can adapt and even flourish during challenging times. Not only did our team members seamlessly keep customer business moving forward as we all transitioned to working from home, but we met challenges like quickly and efficiently administering PPP lending. In fact, we did three times as many loans for customers as some much larger institutions; that's a heavy lift, and everyone rose to the occasion, from makeshift home offices."

Thanks to the Philadelphia Business Journal for recognizing one of our favorite #communitybankers among this year’s 28 chosen leaders. Congratulations to Charlie!
Charlie Crawford wins 1st Place in Community Bankers Association of Georgia's Topgolf Showdown
Hyperion Bank Chairman & CEO Charlie Crawford (photo, right) was the Individual Winner in the Community Bankers Association of Georgia (CBA) Inaugural Topgolf Showdown, held in Atlanta in December 2020.

Topgolf is a competitive virtual golf experience in which players hit micro-chipped golf balls at targets on an outfield, scoring points for furthest distance and landing closest to the center of the target. The event raised funds for CBA’s Political Affairs Committee (CBA PAC), the only Georgia State PAC exclusively committed to representing the interests of Community Banks.

John McNair, CBA President & CEO (photo, left), presented the First Place "trophy" to Charlie, who is a member of the CBA's Board of Directors.

FEATURED BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
KDH Research & Communication
1201 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta GA 30361
Meet Kristen D. Holtz, PhD, and Eric Twombly, PhD, partners in business and life
Kristen Holtz is President and Founder of KDH Research & Communication (KDHRC). Her husband, Eric Twombly, is the company's Principal Research Associate. Together, they run a thriving business and employ 15 people--although as you'll read below, working remotely has given them an unexpected opportunity to expand their team.
What do you like about your business neighborhood? Why did you choose it?

The KDHRC offices have been on Peachtree Street since we opened our doors (in 2006) and we loved the energy of being in Midtown Atlanta. In March this year, like so many other companies, we went all remote. Working virtually went so well that we committed to remote in the future and have expanded our team beyond Atlanta to bring on employees in Washington, D.C. and North Carolina. The pandemic’s requirement for virtual work ended up prompting an unexpected benefit for our company!

How/why did you start your business?
KDHRC is a research and communication firm. We work with federal, state, and private funders to build programs that persuade healthy behaviors. We also design and implement evaluations that explore program impact. We work in drug abuse prevention, reducing health disparities, and health promotion. Our favorite projects translate complex health information into advertising, trainings, and educational documents that help people live better lives.

What do you like best about your business?

Every day is different! We work on so many topic areas, and with many different clients. So on any given day we might be brainstorming new ideas, wrapping up an evaluation, writing a publication, or marketing some of our existing programs. Or all of the above!

What do you like about banking with Hyperion Bank?

Hyperion has been an amazing partner with such strong attention to customer service. I know I can ask them any question and they’ll respond nearly immediately. They’ve helped us grow and more recently, adapt to the challenges of the pandemic. I love having an actual person I can ask for help, advice, or guidance.

Visit the KDHRC website to read more about their rigorous research and powerful programs. To learn more, follow them on social media:

Philadelphia Named One of the Top Places in the World to Visit in 2021!
Since Hyperion Bank is headquartered in Philadelphia, we're proud to share that both Condé Nast Traveler and TRAVEL + LEISURE magazines have named Philly a "must-visit destination in 2021." In Condé Nast Traveler's annual Gold List of top places to visit, our hometown is one of only three U.S. destinations to earn the coveted distinction (along with Washington, D.C. and Kauai, Hawaii!). And TRAVEL + LEISURE dedicated a section of its December 2020 issue to a "Philly Special" feature, with a nine-page spread highlighting the diversity and creativity fueling the city's neighborhoods. These accolades follows Philly's inclusion as the only U.S. city on National Geographic Traveler's annual "Best Trips" list earlier this year.

Calling our friends in Atlanta: Are you looking forward to traveling in 2021? If Philly is in your future travel plans, contact us: our banking team in PHL will gladly share their "insider" tips for the best cheesesteaks and much more!

How to Celebrate MLK Day in the time of COVID-19
January is historically when millions of Americans participate in a day of service or other celebrations commemorating the January 15 birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2021, the federal holiday that has come to be known as MLK Day falls on Monday, January 18. Although most large gatherings will be cancelled due to COVID-19, you can still find ways to honor Dr. King's life and Civil Rights legacy with virtual programs, unity events, and service opportunities, such as volunteering or making donations to shelters and human services organizations that assist people in vulnerable communities with housing, food, education, medical services, job training and workforce development.

AmeriCorps, which has led the day of service movement for a quarter century, says: "MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities." The graphic below provided by Youth Service America offers service suggestions for youth (and adults)!
PHILADELPHIA REGION
Global Citizen King Day of Service, January 18
Global Citizen, a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility, and sustained active citizenship among diverse groups, founded the national King Day of Service movement in Philadelphia in 1996. Since then, the regional event has grown from 1,000 to more than 1,000,000 volunteers working to build community and understanding through on-going partnerships and service. For MLK Day 2021, Global Citizen will be focusing its signature event, held annually at Girard College, on COVID-19 testing. The organization is also planning virtual programming such as the 10th annual Jobs & Opportunity Fair and one or more community conversations around the 2021 theme of Justice and the COVID-19 Health Crisis. Learn more about these events and other volunteer opportunities and virtual programs at Global Citizen's MLK Day portal.

If you wish to make in-kind or financial donations in honor of Dr. King's legacy, Philadelphia has many wonderful nonprofit organizations working to combat social injustice and help vulnerable adults, children, and families who are experiencing homelessness. The Philadelphia Inquirer recommends the following; please visit their websites or call first to review their donation policies, which may be different now due to COVID-19:

ATLANTA REGION
Hands On Atlanta MLK Day of Service
January 14-18
Hands On Atlanta connects people who want to "Do Something Good" to nonprofit organizations and schools in need. Throughout the year, Hands On ATL offers service programs in the areas of arts and culture, the environment, youth and family services, health and wellness, hunger and homelessness, and senior care. The Hands On ATL MLK Day of Service kicks off on Thursday, January 14 from 10 AM to 11 PM with a Beloved Community Global Summit to unite the community, followed by Day of Service virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities and social good events on January 15-18. Hands On Atlanta invites all to "unite in service and join thousands across metro Atlanta to do something good" in hundreds of diverse projects. Learn more about how you can spend a "day on" to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If you prefer to donate, these nonprofits recommended by ATLANTA DOWNTOWN PARTNER FOR HOPE working to end hunger and homelessness welcome your in-kind and financial donations, but due to COVID-19, be sure to call or review their online wish-lists and instructions before you visit:
