An Online Newsletter Showcasing Our Programs For The Month Of July, 2021!
With the upcoming Independence Day weekend, many will be taking their first vacation in over a year and during normal times, young people from all across the country would be descending into Los Angeles for Anime Expo. Unfortunately, there will not be a live event this year, but there will be an online event like last year and we will be at Anime Expo Lite through our panel discussion in coordination with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Hayao Miyazaki, which will be the subject of the inaugural limited exhibition at the museum when it opens later this year.

As part of our efforts to introduce Japanese contemporary authors, we will be releasing an on-demand production with award winning authors Eto Mori, and Julie Lythcott-Haims discussing the struggles of the youth today. New this month is Virtual Karate that is part of our wellness Wednesday series in addition to yoga and meditation. Japanema will also be available this month with the screening of Stardust Over The Town. Finally, if you are interested in learning Japanese this fall, check back soon for registration details.

July will be an event packed month so make sure to mark your calendars and join us for as many events as you can. Make sure to also check out Stage Beyond Borders below, a collection of Japanese performances put together by our headquarters in Japan!

VIRTUAL KARATE EXERCISE AT LUNCHTIME
Wednesday, July 21st
12:30PM PT (15 Minute Session)
We are excited to announce our new program “Karate Exercise”!

Karate was developed over a thousand years ago as a form of unarmed combat to discipline the body and improve the spirit.

World class instructors from Kyokushin Karate of Los Angeles will give you a set of beginner’s level exercises from their basic movement. With their English instruction, you can practice at your work or home by yourself. Increase alertness, self-awareness and self-confidence by conditioning the body and improve speed, strength, and co-ordination.

There will be one 15-minute session starting at 12:30pm. Just go to JFLA's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/JFLALC).

Achieve the unity of body and spirit!

*We recommend comfortable clothing and space so you can move freely during the session.

Japanese Language Education Update 91
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break and continuing to stay safe. Although California reopened up mid-June, our office is not fully open in terms of having events yet. We look forward to seeing everyone in the near future but for now, please keep us updated in how your Japanese language studying is going at [email protected] ! In terms of update on our end, we recently had our own virtual backgrounds featured on Japan Foundation’s SNS such as Twitter and Facebook and received so much positive feedback! We released seven different designs based off of images and themes in relation to Japan and have been giving out to Japanese language teachers and students. If you are interested, feel free to reach out to us and I could send the virtual backgrounds so you can use whenever and wherever! We are always thinking of new ideas to be helpful/useful to Japanese language teachers and learners and we hope these backgrounds can be part of that experience. Also, we have been getting positive responses for our “Minato” animated commercial, course overviews, and registration videos! Have you had the chance to take a look at those videos?

Any questions, please contact me anytime! I look forward to hearing from you.
STAGE BEYOND BORDERS
The Japan Foundation (JF) has started the project “STAGE BEYOND BORDERS—Selection of Japanese Performances,” which presents outstanding Japanese stage performances online for people throughout the world who are seeking opportunities to enjoy Japanese stage performances amid the spread of COVID-19.

Performing arts is one of the earliest forms of entertainment that through strangers and various environments stirs the imagination about ongoing stories and provides hopes and hints about the real world. The Japan Foundation’s online project “STAGE BEYOND BORDERS—Selection of Japanese Performances” is expected to encourage hope for all people who enjoy performing arts by presenting outstanding Japanese stage performances beyond borders in multiple languages. The Japan Foundation hopes to cultivate new fan bases for performing arts and also approach theater professionals in order to hold performances at overseas theaters once interactions among people are allowed to resume.
