An Online Newsletter Showcasing Our Programs for the Month of April, 2022!
The transition between fiscal years is always a hectic one, especially with all the events typically scheduled for the end of the year. There were online events as well as in person events both organized by us and those we were invited to. With all that out of the way, we can no reflect on the new year and the challenges that lie ahead due to forces out of our control.

This month, we are extending the Tanagokoro exhibition until May 28th and we will be organizing our usual trio of Wellness Events. For those interested in the language, we have our Japanese language courses starting this month so make sure you register for the limited seats remaining. Please make sure to join us to experience Japanese language and culture in Los Angeles and Online!
JFLA EXHIBITION
TANAGOKORO: Alternative Crafts by 16 Japanese Contemporary Artists
Extended
Through May 28th, 2022
Mon - Sat 12PM - 6PM
Closed on Sundays, Apr 29/30
Venue: 5700 Wilshire BLVD STE #100
Admission: FREE
Tanagokoro references matters that virtually fit in the palm of one’s hand. As in Yasunari Kawabata’s book, Palm-of-the-Hand stories, the narratives are concise and portable, yet imbued with characteristic depth. The skills involved in handling tools highlight the premium placed on manual dexterity in Japanese culture. The centuries long investment in craft as the primary vehicle for the expression of aesthetic and spiritual values in Japan registers across the board in traditional folk, commercial and classical arts, from silk weaving to street fashion and anime. Tanagokoro introduces sixteen Japanese artists trained in traditional craft-making techniques yet committed to engaging contemporary issues and concerns. Please join us for this special exhibition as we reopen the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles’ gallery space.

Japanese Language Education Update 100
This month, we want to reach out to Japanese Teacher Organizations or individual Japanese language teachers, in the US, who are interested in our Marugoto textbooks. We use this as part of our JF Nihongo Japanese language courses and there is even a web based version as well. If you are interested in our Marugoto textbook, please contact our Library Admin and let us know if you are a teacher or learner and why you are interested in this!

We also want to highlight one of the books we have supported through our programs called Itadakimasu! The Food Culture of Japan by Becky A. Brown. The author went to Japan for field research and took the pictures featured in this book!

Finally, we will be opening our JF digital library through Libby this month in collaboration with our Toronto and New York offices. As a bonus for signing up to receive our newsletter and other mailings from the Los Angeles and New York offices, US based subscribers will be the first to use our new system. We will send out an update/invite once we are ready!
